One of America's Largest Concrete Government Complexes – The Empire State Plaza: https://bit.ly/4xQW4F5 🏙️

The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza (known commonly as the Empire State Plaza, the South Mall, or the Albany Mall) is a complex of state government buildings located in downtown Albany, NY. Built between 1965 and 1976, it houses several departments of the New York State administration and is adjacent to and connected with the historic New York State Capitol, which was built in 1899.

The complex incorporates 8.9 million cubic yards of concrete, clad with 600,000 cubic feet of stone imported from many locations on three continents. Between the pilings and the structural frames of the buildings, over 232,000 tons of steel were used on the project. That is the equivalent of approximately twenty Eiffel Towers!

For fifty years, the Empire State Plaza has stood as the dominant feature of the Albany skyline, and it is all possible thanks to concrete!

Please join us in welcoming Melissa Verwest, P.E., to the NRMCA as Senior Director, Sustainability Programs! 👏

A Professional Engineer in Washington State, Ms. Verwest brings more than 20 years of experience as structural design engineer and is well versed in industry sustainability codes, policies and innovations which will translate to the growing sustainability sector of the ready mixed concrete industry. She joins NRMCA after having served as corporate sustainable materials program lead at member company Knife River Corporation.

In her role, Ms. Verwest will lead the administration, growth and market expansion of NRMCA’s sustainability services portfolio, including Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), CSC Concrete Sustainability Council certifications and related future offerings. She will report to Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar as part of the Association’s Codes and Standards department.

“We are very fortunate to have Melissa joining our team,” stated NRMCA President and CEO Jim Riley. “Our sustainability services, especially EPDs and certifications, are important to our members and I am confident that Melissa’s experience and background will serve the industry well.”

Last week, NRMCA staff traded the office for the water for our annual summer outing! ☀️⛴️

Our team enjoyed an afternoon cruising along the Washington, D.C. waterfront – sharing lunch, taking in the views and spending time together outside of our usual day-to-day work! Some of the group continued the fun afterward at Nationals Park for the Nats vs. Cubs game! ⚾

It was a great opportunity to relax, connect and enjoy a summer day together. Thank you to everyone (especially Heather for leading the charge on planning this) who joined us and helped make it a memorable outing!

Seattle’s Most Famous Landmark - Anchored in Concrete!

This week in National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s America250: Concrete – The Foundation of Our Nation campaign, we’re looking back at the concrete engineering behind the iconic Seattle Space Needle: https://www.nrmca.org/space-needle/

Rising 605 feet above the city, the Seattle Space Needle is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Built for the 1962 World’s Fair, it was once the tallest building west of the Mississippi River.

On May 22, 1961, ready mix trucks made 467 trips over 12 continuous hours, placing 2,800 cubic yards of concrete without interruption. At the time, it was the largest continuous concrete placement in the West. The foundation ultimately weighed 5,850 tons, equal to the weight of the entire structure above it.

This heavy underground block anchored the structure so deeply that the Space Needle’s center of gravity is actually below ground level. This engineering design keeps the tower highly stable against earthquakes and high coastal winds - built to withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour with swaying of only one inch per ten mph, and earthquakes of up to 9.0 magnitude.

The concrete was supplied by Pioneer Sand & Gravel, which later became Glacier Northwest and ultimately joined with California Portland Cement Company to form today’s NRMCA member CalPortland.

More than six decades later, the Space Needle remains a defining piece of the Seattle skyline — and a testament to the concrete foundation making its unmistakable design possible. 🏙️

Registration is open for the NRMCA Concrete Technologist Training and Certification Program (the Short Course), September 14–18, 2026, in Owings Mills, Maryland. Space is limited, and it fills.

✅ Five days. Two certifications. One of the industry's most respected technical credentials.

The Short Course builds a working understanding of concrete, aggregates, and concrete-making materials; the requirements in industry codes and standards; and how to proportion concrete mixtures. Attendees leave with the opportunity to earn NRMCA Level 2 and Level 3 Concrete Technologist certification, credentials recognized across the industry.

Who should attend: Quality, sales, and other technical personnel at ready mixed concrete companies and industry suppliers. New hires in these roles benefit as well.

Come prepared. The course covers significant technical ground and assumes a basic concrete technology background and high-school level math. Registrants receive pre-course study materials roughly three weeks in advance.

Nominations are now open for NRMCA’s 2026-2027 Developing Industry Leaders (DIL) program – a year-long leadership development experience created specifically for the next generation of ready mixed concrete industry leaders.

The incoming class is limited to just 24 participants, with nominations accepted on a first-received basis. NRMCA member companies may nominate up to two individuals, so early submission is encouraged. Help identify and develop the leaders who will shape the future of our industry.
