NRMCA's Brandon Wray and Patrick Matsche recently took the stage in the (re)Building With Resilience Summit in Los Angeles, helping drive an important discussion on how communities can build smarter, safer, and more resilient in the face of growing wildfire risks.

Brandon led the panel "From Design to Decision," challenging attendees to rethink resilience not as an optional upgrade, but as a fundamental requirement of modern construction. Joined by industry experts Margaux Burkholder SE and Karin Martinez Cohen, the discussion explored how lessons from California’s seismic history can help shape a more resilient future.

"We must stop rebuilding with combustible materials in high-risk zones while treating fire resistance as a luxury upgrade," — Brandon Wray

The discussion also brought forward a stark environmental reality: a single severe wildfire season can release double the carbon savings California’s regulations have achieved across all industries over the last 15 years, as was the case with the 2025 California fires.

"By elevating resilience in design, we can further pursue our climate goals and ensure a sustainable future where concrete is the obvious, no-compromise material of choice," — Patrick Matsche concluded.

Build With Strength remains committed to advancing the conversation around resilient design and helping decision-makers understand the benefits of building for the future – read more of this article this this week’s NRMCA E-NEWS: https://bit.ly/4e3NoTH

This unique pavilion blends with the nature around it... thanks to CONCRETE!

The building has 5 petal-shaped roof slabs inspired by pear blossoms, with each slab functioning as an independent structural and spatial element. The petals overlap at different heights and extend through cantilevered edges, producing voids and layered spaces between them. Circular openings, curved walls & layered circulation routes contribute to the spatial depth of the pavilion: https://bit.ly/4fDjWpS

Via ParametricArchitecture - a great example of how concrete can help shape spaces that are both functional and visually inspiring!
