The First Mile of Concrete Highway (1909) in Detroit, Michigan - Woodward Avenue!

As Detroit’s automotive industry grew, roads built for horse-drawn carriages needed to meet new demands. This pioneering project demonstrated concrete’s potential for a new era of transportation. By 1916, concrete pavement stretched 27 miles along Woodward Avenue to Pontiac, Michigan.

NRMCA supports the Senate’s bipartisan permitting reform agreement and joins the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in urging swift congressional action to move critical infrastructure projects forward.

“The Senate’s bipartisan permitting reform agreement is a meaningful step toward getting critical infrastructure projects out of the review process and into construction,” said Jim Riley, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. “Ready mixed concrete producers supply the foundational materials for the roads, bridges, water systems, energy facilities, and manufacturing plants that communities depend on, and those projects cannot move if federal reviews drag on for years. We appreciate the leadership of Senators Capito, Whitehouse, Lee, and Heinrich, and we urge Congress to act quickly so this bill reaches the President’s desk.”
