Keep America Fishing

Keep America Fishing Keep America Fishing keeps you informed and provides tools for engaging in fisheries policy issues.

KeepAmericaFishing™ is leading the fight to preserve your right to sustainably fish on our nation’s waterways. As the voice of the American angler, KeepAmericaFishing works to keep our public resources – our oceans, lakes, rivers and streams – open, clean and abundant with fish. Across the country, preventing or limiting recreational anglers’ access to public waters and fisheries is being touted a

s a new way to manage fish populations. This unprecedented shift undermines the achievements of proven fisheries management methods that focus on conservation and promote sustainable fishing. As a result, the past 10 years have seen a dramatic increase in bans on recreational fishing from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Texas to Minnesota. In an effort to combat access restrictions around the country, the American Sportfishing Association launched KeepAmericaFishing to unite the nation’s 60 million anglers under one voice. Through policy, science and conservation, KeepAmericaFishing works to minimize access restrictions, promote clean waters and restore fish populations. With its conservation partners, KeepAmericaFishing works to limit and provide for review and revision science-based closures to areas in which they are clearly beneficial to the health of the fishery. At KeepAmericaFishing, we are working to give voice to the millions of American recreational anglers who share one thing in common - a passion for fishing.

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of the Interior today announced the largest proposed expansion of hunting and sport fishing opportunities in the history of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, opening or expanding more than 1,450 opportunities across 111 stations in 32 states.

The proposed rule would increase access at 111 field stations, including 107 national wildlife refuges and four national fish hatcheries. It also includes first-ever hunting or sport fishing opportunities at 14 refuges and three hatcheries, reflecting continued progress toward maximizing access where compatible with conservation goals.

A healthy red snapper stock should mean more opportunity for anglers, not more frustration.

Yesterday’s court decision puts a pause on innovative state-led pilot programs that aimed to improve data collection, modernize management and expand reasonable access to South Atlantic red snapper. The result? Uncertainty for anglers, for-hire operators and coastal communities that were ready for the season to begin.

We remain committed to science-based fisheries management that balances conservation with access and supports the businesses and communities that depend on recreational fishing.

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) and Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) have jointly moved to intervene in litigation challenging the National Marine Fisheries Service’s approval of state Exempted Fishing Permits (EFPs) for the 2026 South Atlantic red snapper season.

“For years, anglers have faced extremely limited red snapper seasons despite the stock rebuilding far ahead of schedule,” said Glenn Hughes, president and CEO of the American Sportfishing Association. “These pilot programs represent a transformational opportunity to improve recreational data collection, expand reasonable public access and advance state-led management approaches that have already proven successful in the Gulf. ASA is intervening to help protect that progress for recreational anglers and the sportfishing industry.”
