Thank you to Town of Acton, Massachusetts and the Town's Commission on Disabilities (COD) for honoring Discovery Museum with the COD's inaugural Disability Awareness Award, presented this week here with wonderful representation from the Town, the COD, community members, and former and current Museum staff.
We are so grateful for this recognition, both because it is an honor to do our work in a community that values and supports access, and because the award can help to create broader awareness of the resources we make available to families experiencing a disability. We know that a Discovery Museum learning experience is foundational to children's healthy development—and so we work to ensure that experience is available to every child. Our wheels-accessible treehouse, accessible building and exhibits, deep discounts EBT and WIC families, and free events dedicated to families experiencing a disability and free Friday nights for all are some of the ways we work to do just that.
We have partnered with schools, with Town administration, our fellow businesspeople, and local community organizations, and through an unwavering support for our mission this community has made 43 years and the visits of more than 6 million people—a great many of them Acton residents—possible.
We appreciate those who spoke in recognition of our work at the award ceremony, including Town Manager John Mangiaratti, Select Board Chair Alissa Nicol, DEI Director Wanjiku Gachugi, Acton COD Treasurer Leslie Johnson, and State Representative Dan Sena And thank you to Economic Development Director Patricia Costa for pulling all the pieces together for a memorable recognition and event.
