🚨This is not a drill! Asparagus season is here! 🚨

This much-loved local veggie is exceptionally well-adapted to the cool climate and nutrient-rich soils of the Pioneer Valley, rendering it super sweet and crisp. For over a century, Massachusetts farmers have taken huge pride in these harvests, and we are thrilled to extend that pride to our customers across Boston.

Wanna sharpen your knowledge about these tasty spears? Check out these facts:

👉 The epicenter of Massachusetts asparagus production is in Hadley, a small town in Western part of the State. Called “Hadley Grass” by locals, this crop is so important to the town that residents are currently working to make it the official State vegetable!

👉 Among the many Massachusetts Asparagus fanatics was Queen Elizabeth II, who had it shipped across the Atlantic in for her annual Spring feast at Buckingham palace!

👉 In the 1970s, fusarium bacteria caused a near-collapse of the asparagus industry in Massachusetts. With new disease-resistant cultivars in the late 20th century, asparagus production has now been slowly climbing back over the past decades.

đź’šWelcome to peak greens season at BFHđź’š

Now that we seem to be on the other side of the particularly cold winter we had this year, sunnier days and warmer temps are generating some huge harvests of spinach, arugula, and other leafy greens for farmers in Massachusetts right now. Not only are greenhouse-grown plantings thriving, but we are also witnessing our first outdoor greens harvests too. With this abundance of greens, we’ve been able to offer a wider supply on our availability list, and at our best prices that we’ve had so far this season.

Greens season in the Northeast is always a verdant reminder that so many tasty crops are right around the corner. Our patience all winter will be paying off soon!

Boston Food Hub’s calendar has been chock full during the final stretch of the cold-weather season! The early spring is peak activity for so many agricultural conferences, farm tours, educational activities, and other networking events before we all become occupied with the mountain of summer produce. Some highlights of this season included:

🥯 Our farmer appreciation brunch, when we co-hosted with Boston Area Gleaners at our shared headquarters at Stonefield Farm to celebrate farmers who supply the Food Hub, and who partner with the Gleaners on the food access front (some farms do both!)

🤝 Site visits to customers and suppliers alike, such as Growing places, Land’s Sake Farm, and Nan’s Kitchen.

📚 Educational events, like tabling with the Nutrition Lab at Braintree High School with other local food advocates at the Farm & Sea To School Conference.

All of these activities are far from superficial, but in fact vital for a connected, responsive, and thriving Food Hub and we’re thankful for the opportunities.

Fresh, local produce that’s also cost-effective is a key component of our work at Boston Food Hub. We partner with several food access and nonprofit organizations that are able to take advantage of some of these offerings to provide for food insecure communities.

Two great examples of these organizations are Community Servings and Fresh Truck. Community Servings prepares medically-tailored, ready-to-eat meals for chronically and critically ill individuals and their families. Fresh Truck organizes weekly mobile markets that serve areas of Boston with limited access to fresh produce.

By leveraging the variety and accessibility of items on our weekly availability everybody wins—the farmers get a reliable outlet for some of their most-abundant crops, while the customer receives nutritionally dense, high-quality produce at a competitive price point.

If you live in the Boston area, be sure to check out these organizations and even sign up for a volunteer session—we recently volunteered with both and had a great time!

As we near the end of 2025, we are also saying so long to one of our farm partners and friends: Fat Moon Farm. Elizabeth Almeida of Fat Moon Farm has decided to close her mushroom business as of this week. Fat Moon Farm been a consistent supplier for Boston Food Hub since we started operating, providing our customers with year-round availability of culinary mushrooms and donating surplus to our food access program as available. Growing mushrooms at a production-level scale requires a careful eye, finely-tuned equipment, and strict sanitation procedures. Despite these challenges, Elizabeth has gone above and beyond to raise the standard for mushroom production in the region and be a champion for local produce. We are proud of Elizabeth and her team for their dedication over the years, and wish her all the best in her next steps in her career and life! Her generosity, commitment, and enthusiasm will be greatly missed.

Elizabeth has referred us to some fantastic mushroom growers to source from for next year, stay tuned!

We are proud of our role in getting more local crops onto plates across Massachusetts, especially during the holiday season when everyone deserves a hearty meal with family and friends. We sell produce to Advantage Trucking Group, a local business that is committed to fighting food insecurity through their Haulin’ 4 Hunger campaign. We tagged along for the distribution of these bags, filled with local produce among many other holiday goodies, and were enamored by the hard but rewarding work of the many food pantries and community centers that we visited.

As we enter the final sales week before the end of 2025, we hope hope you too find satisfaction in the bounty around us 🌱

Even though it’s frosty out there, the Boston Food Hub crew is staying busy packing orders (and chipping ice off trucks) for our customers! Our packshed is loaded with apples and so many storage roots, plus some beautiful bright greens—look at those bags of spinach and mixed baby kale from and !

Winter in New England is a challenging but rewarding time of year for growers. Despite the short days and freezing fields, it’s remarkable the variety of crops that farms continue to provide.

These Spicy Greens are a favorite of ours, available on this week’s availability list from Kitchen Garden Farm! We partner with them to source a wide variety of crops throughout the year—from peppers, onions, brassicas, a whole fleet of chicory varieties, and a lot more.

Kitchen Garden Farm is located on 50 acres of fertile soil on the banks of Connecticut River in Sunderland, Massachusetts. Pam Caroline and Tim Wilcox started the farm in 2006 with just one acre, and have expertly scaled up to 65 acres. In 2023, Tim and Pam sold the farm to two passionate employees, Max Traunstein and Lilly Israel. Max and Lilly carry on the mission and values of Pam and Tim, emphasizing freshness and taste in their product, and organic stewardship in their fields.

Next time you’re perusing the grocery store shelves, also look out for their own hot sauce, dried peppers, and other preserved goods made in their onsite kitchen—while we are focused on fresh produce sales, we can assure you from personal experience that they know how to make a good salsa!

It may be a microgreen, but it’s making a macro statement! Alex, the produce manager at , loves the pea shoots and other microgreens that he orders from through Boston Food Hub. Small, local grocery stores like Debra’s are an important customer base for us, and we love playing a role in getting more local crops on their shelves!
