✨ Bridging the Health Gap: Access to Care in Southwest Virginia ✨

Our very own AHCDC Executive Director, Elaine Smith, got to be a part of a panel discussion this past week! Here's what she had to say:

"I was honored to participate in my 3rd Annual Panel Discussion on Friday, October 16th, with the discussion focused on Bridging the Health Gap: Access to Care in Southwest Virginia, hosted by LEAD SWVA at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

As a dental hygiene professional with a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene, I am passionate about improving access to quality, affordable healthcare and addressing the barriers that impact the health and well-being of our communities.
These conversations are so important as we work together to build healthier communities, strengthen partnerships, and create meaningful solutions to improve access to care throughout Southwest Virginia.

🎊 Congratulations, to our very own Dr. Scott Miller! 🎊

We're thrilled to share that Dr. Miller, will soon be inducted as a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international honor dental organization.

This distinction will place Dr. Miller among more than 6,000 dental professionals worldwide who have been recognized as outstanding leaders in the field. The Academy's mission is to recognize and develop leadership in Dentistry by encouraging lifelong learning and service, two values Dr. Miller lives out every day here at AHCDC, training the next generation of dentists.

Changes to Virginia Medicaid could affect your dental coverage in 2027.

Under H.R. 1, many Medicaid expansion enrollees will also face eligibility recertification every 6 months starting in 2027. That means keeping your information up to date and responding to renewal notices will be especially important.

To PROTECT your coverage:
- Keep your contact info up to date with Medicaid
- Read every Medicaid notice you receive
- Respond by the deadline
- Don't skip your dental appointments.
- Need help with enrollment/re-enrollment? Call Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282

Two days, one big mission!

The AHCDC Mini-MOM has officially wrapped, and the results speak for themselves: 58 patients cared for and 103 denture benchmarks completed. We hope each of our patients walked out with a stronger smile and renewed confidence. To our assistants, residents, faculty, volunteers and community partner who gave their time and skill, thank you. You made this happen!

Today at the AHCDC Mini-MOM day 1, we saw 32 patients and created 57 denture benchmarks. Behind every number is a neighbor who came in hoping for care and left with hope for what's next. We're so grateful to our volunteers, our staff, and this community. Thank you for showing up. We are ready for day 2 tomorrow! 💙
