Seventeen volunteers from Master Gardeners of Washington Co. Va, Master Naturalists of Holston Rivers Chapter and Wild Ones Appalachian Chapter came together to plant a native garden at the Coomes Center in Abingdon. 17 volunteers, 200+ plants, 1 hour and DONE! These volunteers ROCK!

Washington County Master Gardeners participated in Steele Creek Park Wildlife Weekend yesterday with the weather actually mostly cooperating. The attendance was lower than usual due to the regional rainy weather, but we still had 35 or more people visit our informational and interactive table. Kids made crafts. Four people signed up for 2027 classes. We sent home seeds, plants, information on butterflies and plants, and crafts. Many thanks to Jennifer Green, Sarah King, Robin Preas for all their dedication and work, and thanks to Debbie Emmel for stopping by with family.

Today topsoil was added to the new additions of the Coomes Center native garden in Abingdon. This is a project shared by Master Gardeners , Master Naturalists and WIld Ones Appalachian Highlands. Over 200+ plants will be added to the garden this Oct. 17th. Hope you can come join us fo the work party ( you will get info soon) . Paula and Loyd Reynolds along with Marc Koonzt represented Master Gardeners at the Saltville Conservation Camp, sponsored by the Upper Tennessee River Watershed. We joined other groups to educate Smyth County 3rd graders. It was a beautiful day, and the students really enjoyed the program on the Amazing Water on planet earth, as well as conservation and wildlife.

This Saturday, September 26, Master Gardeners will award a gift of 100 biodegradable take-out food containers at the Abingdon Farmer's Market. Registrants for this gift are limited to members of organizations (including civic, church, and non-govermental feeding groups) that are currently using Styrofoam take-out food containers. The purpose of the gift is to encourage these organizations to transition to biodegradable containers. The holder of the winning ticket can provide shipping details for their organizaion. The containers will be shipped directly to that group.

More information will be available about local restaurants that have eliminated the use of Styrofoam and about general recycling in the area.

The attached photos show more ribbon winning entries in the Canned Goods and Farms Crops categories.

Cecily Corcoran won Best-in-Show in Canned Goods with her entry of dried Feverfew. Cat Talbot won ribbons in all categories - Farm Crops, Horticulture, Crafts, and Foods. Gil Kaelin was very excited about his first-ever fair entries which included a ribbon for canned Jalapenos. He plans to compete again next year.

Participating in the county fair is just plain fun!

Congratulations to Master Gardeners who won ribbons in the Washington County Fair Home Economics and Adult Farm Crops competitions. Ribbon winners included Ginger Addison, Holly Baumgarner, Cecily Corcoran, Susan Howard, Gil Kaelin, Sarah King, Andrea Metcalf, and Cat Talbot. The attached photos show winners in the Horticulture and Craft Departments. Not all ribbon entries are shown due to the limitations of the Better Impact system.
