At the AFM on 9/5/26, Lisa Sykes, Mae Humiston, & Dottie West ran the WCMG table to discuss Native Plants of SW Virginia. They managed to reach 61 people before the clouds started turning gray and the winds began to really blow! Fortunately, they were able to give away numerous native plants like cinnamon ferns and maypop flowers in addition to native seeds like PawPaw & Milkweed. They showed table visitors the SW Virginia Native Plant book and provided ideas for ground cover, flowers, & trees that would aid our local pollinators. Susan and Cheryl were at the WCMG table (again!) for the August 29 Abingdon Farmers Market, and what a great day it was!
We welcomed 79 visitors to the table, many of whom were new to gardening and arrived with great ideas and lots of questions. It was wonderful to see their excitement about growing their own vegetables and ornamentals and to hear about their garden and landscape design plans. The day’s topic was “All About the Dirt: Soils and Amendments,” and soil test kits were especially popular. We also shared lots of free seeds and gave away a dozen hellebore plants. 🌿Several visitors added their names to the list for next year’s Master Gardener training, too!
Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat, ask questions, pick up some seeds or plants, and share their gardening enthusiasm. We love helping our community grow! 🌻

The theme for the WCMG tent at the August 22nd Abingdon Farmer's Market was cover crops. Thanks to the table volunteers--Mae Humiston, Miranda Mingle, Jaymie Derden, and Gil Kaelin. They interacted with 30 market visitors, and a good number of folks signed up to get information about future Master Gardner training.

It was a beautiful Saturday at a very busy Abingdon Farmers Market. Susan Howard, Cheryl Sams, and Dottie West manned the WCMG booth where they discussed fall planting with 69 table visitors. Free vegetable seeds were distributed along with a very helpful Virginia Commonwealth Extension publication: Virginia’s Home Garden Vegetable Planting Guide: Recommended Planting Dates and Amounts to Plant. The document provides dates for planting vegetables in the spring and fall in growing zones 6, 7, and 8. The rain went around us and we had sunshine. Jake Caldwell shared a lot of information about planting and maintaining the garden plus insect control. If you missed this field trip, Jake has agreed to present information at our September 8th meeting. It will be so beneficial. The only thing that will be missing is that we will not be taking home a bouquet of flowers.

Joanne Stanley, Roane McLaughlin, and Sally Wassom volunteered at the WCMG table for the August 1 Abingdon Farmers Market with the subject of Herbs and Herb Gardens. They made bundles of herbs collected from their gardens to give away, along with seeds from the Extension office. They also shared dill and catnip plants with table visitors. Sally put together a cool poster about Herbs.

Despite a very rainy morning at the July 11 Abingdon Farmers Market, there were 28 visitors at the WCMG table. Mae Humiston and Lisa Sykes fielded questions about vegetable gardening, herbs, the MG class, and groundhogs. They gave away several Cuban oregano and strawberry plants from their gardens.

Master Gardeners enjoyed a tour of Rockhouse Gardens' landscaping, stream, greenhouse, and all the art that was custom made. We left with ideas and photos. All we saw sparked group discussions and stories along the winding rock paths. They had a great selection of affordable plants for sale, and no one left empty handed because Ms. Kim, the owner, gave everyone a gift. If you're in that neighborhood, stop in for a little while.
