Eighty years ago, on May 11, 1946, the first CARE Package® boxes arrived in Le Havre, France. These initial deliveries provided much-needed relief and hope to families struggling to recover from the devastation of World War II.

To meet the evolving needs of modern crises, CARE recently piloted the CARE Package® for Emergencies. This updated kit contains 39 essential items designed to provide immediate support, including:

Kitchen and cooking sets for preparing nutritious meals.

Solar lighting to ensure safety and security after dark.

Collapsible water containers and hygiene kits to maintain health and sanitation.

Emergency shelter materials for home reinforcement and protection from the elements.

This initiative has already seen significant impact in the Philippines. CARE distributed 500 emergency packages to households reeling from the impact of Typhoon Nando in Calayan, Cagayan, and the 6.9 magnitude earthquake in San Remigio, Cebu. By providing these critical resources, CARE continues its long-standing legacy of delivering practical aid to those facing the world's most difficult moments, ensuring that even in the wake of natural disasters, no community is left to recover alone.

CARE aims to deliver up to one million modern CARE PACKAGE kits, reaching two million people worldwide and in the United States, by 2030.

CARE Philippines contributed technical expertise and is now a co-author in the discussions on House Bills Nos. 3405, 6881, 7834, and 8407, which seek to ensure gender-responsive and inclusive programs and protocols that address the specific needs of women during pandemics, public health emergencies, and disasters.
These efforts are an important step toward more inclusive, responsive, and equitable emergency and disaster response systems.

Weathering the storm for a family of 11.

For Ledesma, abaca farming isn't just a tradition—it’s a lifeline. But in recent years, powerful typhoons have threatened to wash away her livelihood and her home.

As part of our Mother’s Day week series and in celebration of , we honor Ledesma’s perseverance. With support from the , she isn't just surviving the seasons; she’s gaining the skills to prepare for them.

From disaster preparedness to diversifying her income, Ledesma is ensuring that no storm can stop her from providing for her family.

Surviving Storms: An Abaca Farmer's Story

Ledesma was born into an abaca farming family and, despite facing numerous hardships and uncertainties, she persevered in her work to support a family of 11. Over the years, she has experienced both abundant harvests and devastating losses. However, recent times have been especially difficult, as powerful storms and typhoons have destroyed her crops and caused significant damage to their home.

With the support of CARE Philippines' women empowerment project in her community funded by the Foundation, she and her fellow abaca farmers gained valuable skills. They learned to explore alternative livelihood opportunities, enhance their marketing abilities, prepare for disasters, and save for the future.

This Mother’s Day week and International Year of the Woman Farmer, we’re honoring Maricel, a Roving Agent for the aGAP Social Enterprise Project. For Maricel, success isn't just about the harvest—it's about the ability to provide.

From struggling to put food on the table to running a thriving agri-shop, she has transformed her family's future.

"My life has changed. I've been able to continue sending my children to school and provide for all their needs."

Together with the , we are proud to support women leaders like Maricel who are cultivating change.

CARE highlights growing concerns around stress, displacement, and well‑being following the Mayon eruption and the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines.

“In both earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, people’s safety, dignity, and emotional well-being must come first,” said Reiza Dejito, Country Director of CARE Philippines. “For women and girls, displacement can bring additional risks, including loss of privacy, increased care responsibilities, disrupted access to health services, and protection concerns. Humanitarian responses must listen to them, understand their priorities, and ensure that support reaches those most at risk.”

This International Year of the Woman Farmer , we celebrate women like Analyn, who continue to grow food, livelihoods, and hope despite powerful storms.

After losing her abaca farm to repeated typhoons, Analyn chose to adapt by diversifying her crops and leading others toward a more resilient future.
