The Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity is a nexus for nationalist, political, and intellectual leadership, based in the UP College of Law since 1939.

Established in 1939 at the University of the Philippines College of Law, the Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity—also known as the Association of Philippine Barristers or Abogado Para sa Bayan—is a Brotherhood founded on the principles of wisdom and liberty - committed to empowering young men to be great, noble, and wise towards excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service to the nation. "We shall not be saved without Wisdom, for Knowledge is Power, but only Wisdom is Liberty."

𝐀𝐋𝐏𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 | 𝐀𝐌𝐋𝐂 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐀Φ𝐁 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟔𝐀 takes the stand as a star witness in the Vice President's impeachment trial.

Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Executive Director Ronel takes his oath as a prosecution witness in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Before the court, he affirmed that presenting the bank, tax, and other related records of the Vice President, her spouse Atty. Manases Carpio, and some corporations allegedly linked to the couple does not violate any laws. Asked if his testimony would violate Republic Act 9160 or the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA), Brod Ronel stated that no violation is committed because the AMLA allows the Council to promulgate rules regarding the handling of confidential documents, and their internal rules allow them to comply with competent authorities like courts. He further noted that the AMLC issued its information exchange guidelines in 2022.

Taking the helm of the historic tribunal on Monday, Oct. 5, FLC Escudero firmly reminded both lawyers and non-lawyers to respect one another and uphold the dignity of the proceedings.

Joining the push to empower the electorate and ensure equitable representation, FLC Alex Lacson AΦB 1987A supports the "Dapat Isa Lang" campaign to gather 7.5 million signatures nationwide. Recognizing that the concentration of power hinders progress, the initiative exercises the constitutional right of the people to shape the law directly so that public office remains accessible to all deserving Filipinos.

54 years on, we remember the sacrifices of those who stood in the line of fire.

The “peaceful” 1986 EDSA revolution was consecrated with the spilled blood of brave, noble, young, and wise men and women who opposed tyranny. It is our paramount duty to remember them.

The Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity has proudly stood on the good side of history. Alphans played pivotal roles in the resistance against the Marcos dictatorship in the 70s and 80s, at the cost of imprisonment, exile, torture, and even death and enforced disappearances.

The Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity joins the nation in protest and in commemorating the horrors since the declaration of Martial Law by then-dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. on 21 September 1972.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫?

The 21st of September is a day of infamy which the country commemorates as the issuance of Proclamation No. 1081; it is a decree with which then dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. placed the Philippines in a state of Martial Law. In its dawn, the dictator espoused the rhetoric of a “New Society” destined to herald the Golden Age of the country. But as history would reveal, the truth behind the edifice holds a darker secret. The progress Marcos promised was built through the spilled blood of thousands and the curtailment of freedoms. We commemorate the lives of the people who were slain, disappeared, and abused for a twisted tyrant’s concept of a “New Society.”

We remember the struggles of those whose fundamental human rights were violated; those gunned down by the military police and salvaged for their dissent; those who were arbitrarily arrested and left for dead after torture; those who never saw the light of day again after being abducated by authorities; and those whose whereabouts remain unknown to this very day.

These numbers are not mere statistics. Behind every tale is a Filipino who was betrayed by the state in the name of “progress” unmet. Behind every death is a family grieving for their loved ones.

𝐖𝐞 𝐨𝐰𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫. To move on without justice is to invite the same tyranny back into our halls. It is our solemn duty as the sovereign Filipino people to remember these atrocities not just as history, but as a warning. It is said that neutrality is siding with the oppressor, but we dare say that forgetting the past is oppression in and of itself. For if a nation collectively forgets, the risk of a repeat of the past’s mistake looms near. We hold on to the truth that power wielded without the benefit of wisdom inevitably leads to chaos and injustice.

𝐖𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞. Justice cannot exist on a foundation of amnesia. Justice requires accountability, reparations, and an unyielding commitment to historical truth. At a time when memory is fleeting and history is rewritten by those in power, 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞.

The Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity proudly congratulates Brod Atty. Jose "Joey" D. Lina Jr. 𝐀Φ𝐁 1977A on being conferred the prestigious Diamond Legacy Award by the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) during its 60th Founding Anniversary.

A dedicated public servant for decades, Brod Joey has held some of the most critical roles in the Philippine government. His historic tenure as a Senator of the Philippines saw him author landmark legislation such as the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992 and the Anti Hazing Law. He further demonstrated his executive leadership as the Governor of Laguna and later as the Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government. This recent Diamond Legacy Award holds profound significance as it recognizes his impactful tenure as the Ex Officio Chairperson of NAPOLCOM from 2001 to 2004, a monumental recognition he shared with his fellow former DILG Secretaries.

The Fraternity commends Brod Joey for this monumental achievement, standing as an exemplar of a public servant who upholds integrity, competence, and service to the highest degree. Guided by wisdom, may he continue to embody the ideals of the Fraternity in his ongoing leadership as the President of The Manila Hotel, using his knowledge and expertise in the service of the Filipino people.

𝐀𝐋𝐏𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 | "A strict, stand-alone, literal interpretation of Article 11, Section 3(6) may result in absurdities and may result in injustices which will defeat the purpose of the Constitution."

Appearing before the Senate as an amicus curiae, Chief Justice (Ret.) Reynato S. Puno AΦB 1959 provided constitutional guidance on the disputed conviction threshold for the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. He emphasized the wording of the Constitution on the threshold vote being a fraction, suggesting flexibility in the denominator based on certain factors relevant to their time. He cautioned that a strict and literal interpretation might defeat the purpose of the Constitution which is accountability of public officers. Moreover, CJ Puno also emphasized the institutional autonomy of the Senate and its sole power to try and decide impeachment cases, including questions on the voting threshold.

By lending his profound judicial wisdom to one of the nation's most historic trials, Chief Justice (Ret.) Puno upholds our enduring mandate. Law serves the people. It is a manifestation of the general will, not a shield from accountability through technicality.

ALPHANS IN THE SENATE IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

Leading the charge for accountability, two Alphans stand at the forefront of the House Prosecution Panel for the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Rep. Ziaur-Rahman "Zia" Adiong AΦB 1999E of the 1st District of Lanao del Sur serves as the panel's spokesperson. Known for his steadfast legislative work in peace building, regional development, and the Bangsamoro transition, Brod Zia leads communicating the panel's pursuit of accountability and keeping the public informed on every development.

Former Rep. Robert Ace Barbers AΦB 2005 of the 2nd District of Surigao del Norte brings extensive legislative insight to the tribunal, serving in the dual capacity of Prosecution Adviser and Spokesperson. A veteran lawmaker recognized for steering major congressional investigations in the QuadComm, Brod Ace provides strategic guidance to the prosecution team.

Through their frontline roles in this historic proceeding, Brods Zia and Ace demonstrate the Alphan mandate to safeguard accountability and stand unwaveringly on the good side of history.

ALPHANS IN THE SENATE IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

As the Senate impeachment court addresses critical constitutional questions in the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, two Alphans stand at the forefront of the proceedings. FLC Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero 1990B leads the tribunal as its Presiding Officer, while former Supreme Court Chief Justice (Ret.) Reynato S. Puno AΦB 1959 serves as one of the court-appointed amici curiae.

Steering these historic proceedings, FLC Sen. Escudero directed the schedule adjustment to dedicate the session entirely to receiving expert constitutional guidance on the disputed conviction vote threshold. To ensure strict order and thorough scrutiny throughout the deliberations, he established that senator-judges will be given five minutes each to pose questions, while both the prosecution and defense must course their inquiries directly through the presiding chair.

Chief Justice Puno joins a distinguished panel of former magistrates tasked to help the Senate resolve the fundamental issue of the voting base. By providing his legal acumen to one of the nation's most defining trials, Chief Justice Puno ensures the proceedings are anchored on sound judicial interpretation and profound clarity, upholding the rule of law at a critical juncture for the nation.
