The Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity commemorates the 6th death anniversary of FLC Sen. Heherson โ€œSonnyโ€ Alvarez ๐€ฮฆ๐ 1952.

FLC Sonny was known for his environmental advocacy through key legislation he authored like the Clean Air Act (Rep. Act No. 8749) and the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (Rep. Act No. 9003). These bills would help alleviate environmental and waste problems of the country, buying valuable time for future generations and helping avert the effects of climate change.

Beyond being a visionary, FLC Sonny was also a warrior. He was part of the โ€œMagnificent Sevenโ€, the seven delegates of the 1971 Constitutional Convention who opposed the Marcos-backed Constitution. His firm stances against the dictatorship manifested in his establishment of the โ€œMovement for a Free Philippinesโ€ which later exposed the hidden riches and human rights abuses of the Marcoses to the world.

He was a Senator, a Statesman, an Environmentalist, and most importantly, an Alphan. Where most would descend into short-term thinking, he looked further ahead into the future through his environmental advocacy. When most would cower under the fear of a dictator, he fought for liberty through wisdom, against all odds.

Once an Alphan, Always an Alphan.

Rafael โ€œPaengโ€ Estrada AฮฆB 1939.

Kabilang dito sina Benedicto Balderrama AฮฆB 1939, Antonio Azores AฮฆB 1939, Brig. Gen. Elias Lavadia AฮฆB 1939, Manuel Vistan Jr. Aฮฆ B 1939 at Delfin Garcia AฮฆB 1939.

Ambassador Malaya highlights diplomacy as โ€œthe bridge that connectsโ€ while law as โ€œthe bedrock on which that bridge is builtโ€, emphasizing the interactions between law and diplomacy in todayโ€™s global order. The updates on the handbook documents rules and safeguards the Philippinesโ€™ commitment to diplomacy by bridging the gap between our diplomats and academic minds. Most importantly, the text was written in a language digestible even by non-lawyers who want to learn the fundamentals of treaty practice.

The book launch at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Pasay City was attended by esteemed practitioners of law and diplomacy, including the bookโ€™s co-author, UP Law Professor Rommel Casis, and the Collegeโ€™s Dean Gwen Grecia-De Vera. During the launch, Ambassador Malaya emphasized the need to streamline processes to promote stability, transparency, and coherence in the countryโ€™s diplomacy and treatymaking practices.

Copies of the book are available at the UP Law Center.

The Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity commemorates the 107th Birth Anniversary of Brod Renato "Tato" Constantino ๐€ฮฆ๐ 1939. Brod Tato served the people with a brave, critical, and sharp analysis of the Filipino Identity. The Fraternity continues to remember his legacy, continuing to endeavor the standard of excellence he upheld.

He served as an Editor-In-Chief of the Philippine Collegian. As one of the founding brothers of the Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity, Brod Tato fought against oppression during the Quezon administration, and against the Japanese occupation. Later in his life, he served as a member of the Philippine Mission to the United Nations.

His unique approach to historiographical writing challenged the dominant colonial narrative during the time, providing future generations a new appreciation for our identity as a people. This new understanding was reflected through landmark works such as The Miseducation of the Filipino, Veneration Without Understanding, and many others; pieces that continue to remain relevant today.

He was a prolific writer who enriched historical discussions. He was an advocate for a more critical and nationalistic discourse on our identity as a people. Most importantly, he was an Alphan who was guided by wisdom in his pursuit of liberty. Brod Tato's excellence serves as a reminder that our past can be used in the present to help build a better future.

He's an Alphan, true and through!
