On April 22, 2025, members of Soroptimist International of Meycauayan 170146 joined the Earth Day 2025 celebration with the theme “Our Power, Our Planet” held at the Washington SyCip Garden of Native Trees in UP Diliman, Quezon City. Organized by Soroptimist International Philippines Region (SIAPR), the program opened with heartfelt remarks from Governor Marivic DS Paras, who emphasized the importance of native trees and shared that SIAPR’s target is to plant 60,000 trees by 2026. Ms. Imelda Sarmiento followed with an inspiring talk on the value of Philippine native trees, noting that the country is home to about 3,600 native species, many of which remain unfamiliar to most Filipinos. Her message encouraged everyone to care more deeply for our forests and understand the critical role of trees in supporting biodiversity, local culture, and environmental balance. A Para-Liturgy for Earth Day was led by Fr. Ben Beltran, SVD, and a Gospel reading from John 15:1-5 reminded us of our interconnectedness with nature and the importance of bearing fruit through responsible and mindful living. Attendees reflected on themes of interconnection, pruning for growth, and advocacy before embarking on a guided Tree Walk led by botanist and taxonomist Jason Mansibang. During the walk, we encountered various indigenous and endemic trees such as Banato, Bignay Kalabaw, Mangkono, Antipolo, Supa, and Tindalo, some of which are now endangered. These trees provide not only food and medicine but are also essential to maintaining ecological balance and climate resilience. SI Meycauayan members were able to gather fallen seedlings and small trunks to plant in their local areas, continuing the spirit of Earth Day beyond the event. The program concluded with the inspiring closing remarks of Chairperson Lenn Berroya of the SIAPR Biennium Thrust 2024–2026, who encouraged all to continue advocating for environmental sustainability. The experience was both educational and meaningful, reminding us of our responsibility to care for creation and inspiring us to act for the benefit of future generations.
