CPD returns to the NZ Plumbing Conference 2026, and it's the first chance in the country to walk through how self-certification will actually work in practice.

You'll come away knowing what you can sign off, what you're responsible for, and what you need to do to stay compliant — well ahead of the wider CPD rollout later in the year and ahead of self-certification itself, which is expected to start around the end of August 2026.

This means you'll know how it works before you have to, and you'll be having confident conversations with your customers while others are still catching up.

Exciting news for plumbers and drainlayers! 🙌

The government has expanded the proposed self-certification scheme to include more routine plumbing and drainlaying work, including some commercial jobs.

The feedback we, and members, gave throughout the Bill's consultation process is reflected in today's announcement.

Now in scope for self-certification:
✅ Septic tanks & pumped systems
✅ Stormwater retention & greywater systems
✅ Certain commercial jobs

More complex work will still require council consent and inspection.

"The Minister has listened to industry feedback and worked collaboratively with the sector to ensure the new scheme is practical and effective," says Greg Wallace, CEO of Master Plumbers and Masterlink.

"The scheme strikes a sensible balance between maintaining standards and enabling efficiency, and will be well received by plumbers, drainlayers, and consumers alike."

The Bill is progressing through Parliament, with rollout expected later this year.

We’re glad to see the wider impacts of rising PVC and fuel costs across New Zealand’s construction sector receiving national coverage — speaking with Master Plumbers and Masterlink CEO Greg Wallace, and Master Plumbers member Darren Minifie from D.L. Good Plumbers.

For plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying businesses, this is more than just a headline — some members are already seeing the effects in their daily operations. As Darren explains to 1 News, “We would normally purchase 3–4 pallets every couple of weeks. Now we're limited to one or two…”

While PVC supply in New Zealand remains steady, tradespeople are keeping a close eye on job orders and workflows as PVC prices rise 25–30% in May.

Gathering with 250 members, partners, and industry friends in such a prestigious venue was a privilege, and a wonderful way to celebrate over a century of dedication to our industry.

We were joined by the Governor-General of New Zealand, Her Excellency The Right Honourable Dame Cindy Kiro, Vocational Education Minister Hon. Penny Simmonds MP, and Life Member Ray Galt, along with 250 members, business partners, and industry friends from across Aotearoa.

An incredible night that celebrated our people, our mahi, and our history — and the first of many celebrations to mark this milestone year!
