The Clubs New Zealand Club & Community Awards are returning for 2027, and entries are open.

Following the inaugural awards, we’re once again looking forward to recognising the clubs, people and initiatives doing great things across our network and within their communities.

Entries opened 14 September, you need to get your submission in before entries close on 20 November.

Finalists will be announced in January, with the winners revealed at the Club & Community Awards Dinner on 2 April 2027.

Do clubs really have to be cheaper?

It’s an expectation that’s been around for decades, your local club should be cheaper than other hospitality venues.

But is that still realistic?

Being not-for-profit doesn’t mean not making a profit. It means any surplus goes back into the club to maintain facilities, make improvements and invest in the future.

Clubs face the same rising costs as other hospitality businesses, from wages and power to insurance, licensing and supplies. Many are also maintaining large, ageing buildings where putting off repairs today can mean a much bigger bill tomorrow.

So perhaps the question isn’t “why isn’t my club cheaper?”

It’s “how do we make sure our club is still here in 10, 20 or 50 years?”

Providing value for members will always matter. But so does building a strong, sustainable club that will be there for generations to come.

🎟️National Raffle Day 🎟️

Today clubs across New Zealand once again came together for National Raffle Day, taking a much-loved club tradition and using it to support something bigger.

We all know the classic club raffle. A couple of dollars for a ticket, a meat pack or tray up for grabs, and plenty of anticipation when the winning number is called.

But National Raffle Day is about more than the prize.

Funds raised support Club Connect, Clubs New Zealand’s mental health and wellbeing initiative, helping us continue to build awareness, connection and support within our club communities.

Last year, 50 clubs got behind the first National Raffle Day and more than $28,000 was raised.

Clubs were in the media last week as Regulation Minister David Seymour and Transport Minister Chris Bishop announced changes to courtesy-coach rules at the Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club.

Our Chief Executive, Lucy Waterreus, spoke to 1News and RNZ about what the changes will mean for clubs and their communities.

The new rules will make it easier for clubs and hospitality venues to provide safe transport for their members and guests.

Courtesy coaches are about much more than getting people home safely after a night at the club. They help older members stay connected, transport sporting groups and support people in rural communities where taxis and rideshare services may be limited or unavailable.

Clubs New Zealand has advocated for these changes for many years, highlighting how passenger-service licensing requirements were creating unnecessary barriers for community-based transport.

It may seem like a small change, but it will make a meaningful difference to clubs and the communities they serve.

The government will change regulations so hospitality businesses that offer drop-off services to their customers will not be stung by fees.

For the first time, Clubs New Zealand has produced an Election Manifesto, setting out the issues that matter most to clubs and the communities they serve.

Our clubs are an important part of communities across New Zealand, but they’re also navigating increasing costs, regulatory pressure, and a changing operating environment.

The 2026 Election Manifesto gives us a clear platform to take those issues to political parties and candidates ahead of the election, and to advocate for practical policies that support strong, sustainable clubs.

We encourage all members to take a look, share it with your committees and boards, and use it to support conversations with your local candidates.
