The platform offers practical, everyday support for navigating digital life. As you’ll likely be aware, many parents, caregivers and whānau are finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with online spaces and support the young people in their care.

The 2026 New Zealand Book Awards for Children & Young Adults shortlist is out, and it’s a powerful snapshot of the stories shaping our tamariki today.

From a Tokelau teen’s diary infused with hiva and 90s R&B, to time travel in te reo Māori – this year’s finalists reflect a bold, unmistakably Aotearoa voice.

With 30 finalist titles selected from 159 entries, judges were moved, challenged and delighted by stories exploring identity, empathy, connection and grief. Thousands of young readers also contributed more than 450 in-depth reviews, ensuring their voices helped shape the shortlist.

Libraries across the motu play a vital role in championing these creators – established and emerging – and connecting young readers with stories that reflect who they are.

The next LIANZA Le Moana webinar will look at the work of DigitalPasifik and the future of Pacific cultural heritage.

In this webinar, Taputukura Raea, Programme Manager for Digital Pasifik at the National Library of New Zealand, will share insights into the Digitalpasifik journey over the past six years and look ahead to the project’s next phase.

Digitalpasifik has connected Pacific GLAM organisations, tertiary partners, and communities across the region, making important measina more visible and accessible.

Through this work, the platform has highlighted significant challenges faced by the Pacific GLAM sector in caring for and protecting cultural heritage. In the next phase, Digitalpasifik addresses these challenges with practical, sustainable solutions and a new strategy rooted in Pacific thinking, ensuring the project’s future direction is meaningful, relevant, and beneficial for Pacific peoples.

This session will be of interest to library and information professionals working in: Indigenous and Pacific knowledge contexts, collections and heritage, community engagement and partnership building and GLAM collaboration and digital access.

Register for this webinar to be held on: May 20, 12-1pm here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/-DMR7l1ARdiqvQYPu0n1dA

While school librarians won’t encounter the same volume and variation of copyright issues
that other libraries tend to, keeping up to date with copyright rules and passing on the importance of copyright is still a very important aspect of a school librarian’s job.

Updated information posters are now available for school library environments.

Three separate posters have been developed for different school copyright information needs - a
basic overview of copyright information for display to students and teachers, a reminder
about copyright allowance and licences for school librarians, which would suit a workroom or office space and specific information around the Primary and Secondary Schools Copyright
Licence to be displayed in the main library of schools that subscribe.

These can be downloaded from the copyright page on the LIANZA website: https://www.lianza.org.nz/about/advocacy/copyright/

“Receiving a LIANZA Associateship last year motivated me to reconsider how I could give back to the profession in a meaningful way. A strong and centred sense of self can provide the focus needed to keep moving forward professionally. The pathway that led to my Associateship was built on that premise, and I hope that in accepting it, others will see a way forward for themselves.”

This week - 20 school children who had a key role in shaping a new digital initiative showcasing ANZAC histories and stories attended the launch at Archives New Zealand in Wellington today.

ANZAC Stories draws on thousands of items, pictorial and written, formal government records and personal documentation from the collections held by Archives New Zealand and the National Library.

The launch was attended by children and teachers from Belmont School in Lower Hutt and Adventure School in Porirua who were an integral part of the look and feel of ANZAC Stories.

“It was really pleasing and important to have the children here to see the amazing new resource ANZAC Stories that they have helped bring into being,” says Archives and Library Director Digital Mark Crookston.

“While the key audience for ANZAC Stories is written and curated for nine-to-13-year-old children, it is relevant, informative and fascinating for all ages.

“ANZAC Stories focuses on World War I and World War II. We recommend families use the site to help discuss Anzac history with their kids. It features engaging content supported by quizzes, short games, and interactive elements that encourage exploration and learning in a fun, age-appropriate way.”

What are you reading? It's World Book Day today so this is a good question!

If today jolts you into wanting to find a good book to read - take a look on Kete's website and their reviews of NZ books or ask your friendly librarian for their advice on a good read. I guarantee you'll find one!

I'm particulalry interested in David Hill's review of Sally Wenley's book 'Crash'. A compelling, unflinching and insistently authentic memoir, from journalist Sally Wenley.

Take a look here:
