Age Concern chief executive Karen Billings-Jensen said no one knew exactly how many older people were sleeping rough around New Zealand, but she suspected the Northland numbers were echoed nationwide.

Housing insecurity often affected older people who were renting but could also affect those who had owned a home all their lives.

That could be due to shocks such as the death of a partner or a family breakdown.

"We know those things happen and really rock someone's security. We also know there is an increase in people renting so home ownership is dropping around the country," Billings-Jensen said.

A long-time Whangārei housing advocate says official numbers of people living rough are "the tip of the iceberg".

We’re continuing our series of simple challenges to raise awareness of elder abuse and encourage positive action in our communities.
Every step we take helps create a culture where older people feel respected, valued, and safe.

Share this with others or tell us how you’re taking part. Your actions can inspire someone else to take a step too.

➡ Today's challenge is to take a step to challenge ageism

Ageism can show up in everyday comments, assumptions, or jokes about getting older. You can make a difference by speaking up, showing respect, and celebrating the contributions of older people.

It might be as simple as:

✅ Challenging a stereotype when you hear it
✅ Including older people in conversations and decisions
✅ Valuing their experiences and stories

Because every challenge to ageism helps build a more inclusive and supportive community.

Sometimes it's those daily small gestures that count.

Let us know what's a small change you can do to make a difference to older people in your life, and be in the draw to win a double pass ticket to see the film Glenrothan. We will be drawing the winners today.

Summary:
After almost 40 years in Chicago, Donal (Cu***ng) reluctantly returns to the Scottish Highlands to make amends with his estranged older brother, Sandy (Cox). Sandy needs Donal to take over the family business - the Glen Nairn whisky distillery - and secure the family’s legacy. But Donal has another reason to return to the land of his birth. One he keeps hidden from his brother. While Donal struggles to deal with the memories of his youth and the trauma of his reason for his leaving, his devious actions in the present threaten the reconciliation so longed for by his older brother, Sandy.

We’re continuing our series of simple challenges to raise awareness of elder abuse and encourage meaningful action.

Every step you take helps build a safer, more supportive community for older people. Share your thoughts or pass this on . Together, we can inspire more people to take that step.

➡ Todays challenge: Take the step to learn the signs of elder abuse

Knowing what to look for can make all the difference. By learning the signs, the faster we can detect when something isn’t right and to help.
Because awareness is the first step toward action.

For more information on the types of elder abuse, including what it looks like, you can go to our website - https://ageconcern.org.nz/Public/Info/Services/Elder_abuse_and_neglect/Types_of_Elder_Abuse.aspx
