Warm greetings from the Ceylon Bible Society! Reverend Priyanta Vijay Gunavardhana here, celebrating our cherished partnership with the New Zealand Bible Society. Over the past three years, we've worked together to make God's word accessible to everyone, especially through our Literacy Project in Sri Lanka. It's heartening to see children who were once unable to read now learning, growing, and finding their voice. This partnership has brought confidence and dignity to many, deepening their faith in the process.

Congratulations to Bible Society New Zealand on 180 years of faithfulness and ministry. We are honoured to stand with you in God's mission. Thank you for your generosity and enduring partnership. May the Lord continue to bless your work for many more years.

United Bible Society 2026 Literacy Day Celebration

Watch this video from the UBS Literacy Day celebration and see how the joy of learning the Scripture brings people together!

Literacy is about more than learning to read and write. It opens doors to education, builds confidence and gives people the opportunity to read and understand God’s Word for themselves.

Through Bible Society literacy projects, children and adults are gaining valuable skills, discovering the joy of learning and growing in their understanding of Scripture.

This is why literacy remains an important part of our Bible Mission: making Scripture accessible and helping people engage with God’s Word in a language they understand.

Colenso's press speeds up printing

Frustrated by lengthy delays from sending manuscripts to Sydney or London for printing, missionaries in New Zealand requested a printing press.

William Colenso, who at the time worked for the Bible Society's printers in the United Kingdom, was appointed as a missionary and sent to New Zealand with a small press aboard the Blackbird.

Twenty-one-year-old Colenso was immediately disappointed upon unpacking the cases in Paihia to find critical parts missing - and there was no paper!

Colenso was able to get the press working with the help of a joiner, by making some stopgap parts with wood and stone.

My name is Sadunika. I am 12 years old and I am in Grade 7. My dream is to become a doctor.

But last year, illness changed everything. I was unable to attend school for a whole year, including spending six months in hospital. When I finally returned to school, I had fallen far behind and had even forgotten some of the letters I once knew.

Then I joined the Ceylon Bible Society’s literacy programme.

At first, learning again was difficult. But little by little, I began to remember my letters and regain my confidence. Through reading, sports and other activities, I started to enjoy learning again.

“After attending this class, I felt like I want to go back to school again.”

Today, I am very interested in learning. I am excited to continue my education and still dream of becoming a doctor so I can help people who cannot afford medical care, just as I have experienced.

“I thank God and the Ceylon Bible Society for having me here in the class.”

Sadunika’s story shows what can happen when a child is given another opportunity to learn.

Across Sri Lanka and beyond, Bible Society literacy programmes are helping children and adults develop confidence, strengthen their education and discover the hope of God’s Word.
