Care packages with supportive messages thoughtfully made by students at Queen Margaret College ! 💫

For their Year 10 community project, students Dora and Ana chose Wellington Women’s Refuge to support. They asked the team what items would be most useful to us and created 24 packages for women, and 12 packages for children. These packages were made up of environmentally friendly products and daily essentials for those using refuge services.

A quote from the students: “We are passionate about women’s rights and equality and want to make a small but meaningful contribution to people experiencing difficult circumstances.”

We are so grateful for your support girls 💜💜

There can be a lot of misconceptions around if the Woman’s Refuge is the right place to go and if it is a place where your situation will be accepted, respected and understood. This is totally understandable and here are some clarifications about the members of the community we serve. Women’s Refuge is a safe and non-judgemental environment where you will always be properly heard and listened to 💜🤍

Many thanks to the team at MANE✨✂️

This year we were selected as their charity of choice!

Earlier in the year, their talented team of hairdressers and stylists graciously donated their time to give some of our clients a complimentary salon experience.

We so appreciate that they recognised the value of treating the wāhine who have used refuge services directly and this was an amazing opportunity to be able to provide 💜

This past weekend they also organised an in-store clothing sale, with donated items from staff and customers with all proceeds heading to us!

We love how generous and giving the community around us is ✨✨ It is amazing to see how it comes full-circle and our team really appreciates that!

Our volunteers are such a vital part of our mahi, and they all contribute so much to the Wellington Women’s Refuge team. Each one of our volunteers brings their own strengths to the role, and today we would like to highlight one of them! This is Eleanor and here are some things she has to say about her experience with us 💜

Support the cause...support your rights...

If you're a woman and think feminism isn't for you, read this:
The career you're building, the birth control you choose, the ability to leave a bad relationship, the right to speak up at work, the right to vote, the ability to own property, and even get a credit card without a man's permission. All of this exists because feminists fought for it.

Acknowledging our dedicated team of social workers on NZ social workers day - ngà mihi for the valuable mahi you do; bringing empowerment and safety to women and children 💜

This month, two occasions sit close together:
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (14–20 Mahuru/September) &
Aotearoa New Zealand Social Workers Day (16 Mahuru/September).
One honours te reo Māori; the other honours the mahi of social workers alongside whānau and communities across the motu. Together, they're a chance to pause, celebrate te reo, and acknowledge one another.

This year we're inviting workplaces, organisations and kaimahi across Aotearoa to mark both in the spirit of Kotahitanga; and to show us how.

Kotahitanga is woven through social work: whānau, communities and kaimahi pulling in the same direction. It doesn't need to be elaborate. Share kai, kōrero in te reo, gather your tīma, decorate your space, wear your ANZASW colours, or simply take a moment to acknowledge one another. However it looks in your workplace, we'd love to see it.

Let's mark these two occasions together: celebrating our profession, weaving te reo Māori into our everyday, and acknowledging the aroha, dedication and collective mahi of social workers across Aotearoa.

He waka eke noa.

Not all violence leaves bruises.

Sometimes it looks like: debt in your name, emptied bank accounts, ruined credit, no access to money or years of financial control.

Yet economic abuse is still invisible and misunderstood in Aotearoa. We want to change that.

Today we are launching our new movement, This is Violence, focused on raising awareness of economic abuse and to push for systemic reform to better support victim-survivors.
