PPTA Te Wehengarua - New Zealand Post Primary Teachers' Association Authorised by NZPPTA, 60 Willis St, Wellington The PPTA stands for public education. More than 95% of eligible teachers choose to belong to the Association.

The New Zealand Post Primary Teachers' Association Te Wehengarua (PPTA) is the professional association and union representing secondary teachers and principals in Aotearoa New Zealand. For more than 50 years, PPTA members have worked in and out of school to ensure all young people in New Zealand have equitable access to a high-quality public education. The PPTA represents the professional and industrial interests of some 20,000 secondary teachers in state secondary, area, manual training, and intermediate schools, as well as tutors in community education institutions, alternative education and activity centres, and principals in secondary and area schools.

✨Last week our Annual Conference confirmed two regional name changes! Let's celebrate Te Tai Tokerau and Te Matau a Māui - formerly Northland and Hawkes Bay regions.

🪝Te Matau a Māui, which translates to "The Fishhook of Māui" aligns the naming of the PPTA's region with the traditional Māori name eastern coastline of the North Island, including the region now called Hawkes Bay. For mana whenua, Te Matau-a- Māui is far more than a place name; it reflects whakapapa, mātauranga Māori, and the enduring relationship between people and their environment. The use of this name honours the identity and narratives that have been embedded in the region across generations.

🌊 The region of Te Tai Tokerau covers a large geographical area, formerly split into upper, lower, and central regions. The new names utilise the structural components of a waka "Te Kei" (The Stern), "Te Haumi" (The Joining Piece), and "Te Ihu" (The Prow) o Te Tai Tokerau. These components symbolise unity, collective alignment, and navigating forward together as a unified region.

✨ We recently asked teachers to share ways that they're supporting their students, communities, and colleagues to get enrolled!
🤝 Teachers make a difference as leaders and trusted voices in our communities. You can bridge barriers to voting and civic participation that other people can't. Enrolment isn't just about checking your own details - it's about encouraging others to check theirs and to take part.
🧐 Some things to that are helpful to know if you're enrolling people in your school:
1. You must be enrolled by 25 October to vote in this years election
2. If you are on a resident visa and have lived in NZ for at least 1 year, you can enrol to vote.
3. You can enrol when you are 17, and then you will be automatically put on the electoral roll on you're 18th birthday.

💬 We're going to talk about who can vote, how to get enrolled, making a plan to vote and what to expect when you get there. If you're a migrant worker, overseas-trained teacher, or just want to learn more - you're more than welcome to come along!
👩🏽‍🏫 Teachers have the ability to support so many people with understanding their rights when it comes to voting. Sharing information within our schools, communities, and networks about enrolling to vote is the important role that you play.

📄 A pre-publication Waitangi Tribunal report has found the Crown breached multiple principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in its overhaul of the national curriculum and NCEA.
The Waitangi Tribunal categorised the Crown failures across four fundamental Treaty principles, identifying a total of seven specific breaches in the design and implementation of the curriculum: breaches of the principle of partnership, active protection, equity, and good government.
💬 "The Tribunal has found that these changes were pursued without genuine partnership with Māori and without robust evidence that they would address educational inequity. Those findings should concern anyone committed to achieving equitable outcomes for all learners," said PPTA President Chris Abercrombie.

📢 Ministry leaks show attempts to hide curriculum development processes from the public
🎥 Leaked footage given to the NZ Herald shows a senior Ministry of Education official telling staff not to put information shared with the minister's office in writing because it was "OIA-able" - referencing the Official Information Act. Staff at the Ministry of Education have claimed that senior leaders repeatedly asked staff verbally to make changes and refused to put their instructions in writing even when asked.
💬 "It confirms rumours we've been hearing that there's this real push to not have things written down, to be really opaque about what's occurring in the curriculum," says PPTA President, Chris Abercrombie. "If there's anything in this country that should be done publicly, it's our national curriculum... There should be no secrets about this and it should be clear who's involved, why they're involved, and the process behind it."
