Tūmanako Children’s Artworks for a Peaceful World on now!

With extended opening hours during school holidays:
Mon, Wed, Fri 10-3
Sat 11-2

Artworks from tamariki and young people from across Wellington are based on the Whakataukī/Māori Proverb:

Kotahi te kākano whakaaro,
He nui ngā hua o te rākau houhou rongo.
One seed of thought grows the forest of peace.

You're invited to join a global, intergenerational event commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. There are four sessions to choose from, starting 10am today.

The event will include:
* Short presentations by experts from around the world.
* Special screenings of the short documentary An Ordinary Insanity followed by discussion with the director and producer;
*Discussion of the principal calls made in the Joint Appeal for Nuclear Abolition Day;
* Examples of the social media action Stop Nuclear Weapons: Peace is in our Hands.
* Short cultural performances for peace and nuclear abolition.

Last night we celebrated UN International Day of Peace (21 Sept) in our gallery with our friends at PPSEWA and surrounded by the beautiful children’s artworks for a peaceful world, which we also opened on the evening.

It was fitting to hear and see the voices of young people alongside grassroots champions of peace, including founding member of Amnesty International UK Paul Oestreicher OBE.

We were reminded that peace is a process, and both an individual and collective responsibility. It involves restoring safety, security and a sense of belonging. It can be uncomfortable, and it demands an unsettling amount of courage.

One young speaker challenged us to think about how we use social media: Do young people have the empathy and knowledge to act against war? We need to learn to see the world, including understanding media literacy and algorithms, before we can change it.

As the UN reminds us this year, peace requires investment, for everyone, everywhere, every day.

Tūmanako Children’s Artworks for Peace exhibition is now open until 18 October. Come and spend some time with these young voices and their hopes for a peaceful world.

Join us as we mark UN International Day of Peace with an afternoon of reflection, kōrero and connection.

Hear from peace activists and people who are dreaming of peace for their home countries, and be part of a conversation about the role each of us can play in building a culture of peace.

Our keynote speaker is Paul Oestreicher OBE, founding member and former Chair of Amnesty International UK, who will share reflections from his lifelong work for peace and human rights.

We’ve had the real privilege to host a couple of youth-led activities in our whare over the last week. Our friends celebrated the volunteers who help shape experiences of refugee background youth across the mutu. We also hosted four wonderful young and emerging artists who are using the arts to make environmental science really accessible and clever. The exhibition continues to be on this Thursday and Friday 10-3 and Saturday 11-2.

We also want to acknowledge and celebrate the many young people who’ve shared their stories, experiences, passions and creativity in our space over the past year. You know who you are! Thank you for all you do!
