Q: "How does the community benefit from the work of the UCTT?
A: Founding trustee John Wellington - "In an expensive town, where everything costs a little or a lot more than much of New Zealand, having access to a good network of walking and cycling tracks is one of the free forms or recreation that is available. The Trust develops different styles of track to cater to different users, but rightly leaves the serious MTB tracks to the local experts Bike Wanaka."

The Upper Clutha Tracks Trust celebrates 20 years this month (October).

Q: How do you and you family use the track network?
A: Trustee Mark Price - The Upper Clutha's roading network is not that nice for road cycling - narrow edges, chip seal and fast cars - so creating and maintaining a safe place for grandchildren on bikes seems like a worthwhile undertaking.

Q: How do you and you family use the track network?
A: Founding trustee John Wellington - "Not as much as I should. It's funny, as soon as a new track is built, it immediately seems like it has been there forever."

Q: What range of skills did you bring to the UCTT and how have they been of value to the work of the UCTT?
A: Trustee Mark Price - I can drive a digger, a bit, but no one has asked yet. I try to get the word out that the trust is a bunch of volunteers who can only improve and extend the district's track network with support from the community.

Q: What range of skills did you bring to the UCTT and how have they been of benefit to the work of the UCTT?
A: Founding trustee John Wellington - "I like to think my vision of an interconnected track network has helped drive the trust to achieve some of the tracks to date. I am quite tenacious at lobbying for tracks both within the trust and externally and I have also been reasonably effective as a fundraiser for the projects."

Q: Which project/s brought you the most satisfaction?
A: Trustee Mark Price - "As a relatively new trustee I haven't seen any projects through from start to finish, but it is satisfying to see the diggers begin upgrading the Hawea River Track. When the track was constructed 20 years ago, it was partly funded by the Government - via the New Zealand Transport Agency - as a commuter track. Are you commuter? Let us know.

Q: Which particular projects have you been most closely involved with and why?
A: Founding trustee John Wellington - "I have been closely involved with most tracks but another founding trustee, John Pawson, really took the lead on the Hawea River Track and the Upper Clutha River Track and as a result of his leadership, got the trust well established before his untimely death. I have a keen interest in creating a network of access and have often been advocating for routes that have subsequently been developed."

Q: How did the Upper Clutha Tracks Trust start?
A: Founding trustee John Wellington - "Following the establishment of the Whakatipu Trails Trust (as it was then), Julian Haworth and I lobbied the Queenstown Lakes District Council to form a Trust in the Upper Clutha to develop better public access and new tracks. At that time I was more focused on walking than cycling. Coming from the UK where there were extensive public rights-of-way, the lack of access without seeking permission here was frustrating. The Trust was a route to be able to develop access on as-of-right land (marginal strips and unformed legal roads).

Attention Walkers and Cyclists

From Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the Upper Clutha Tracks Trust will be upgrading the Hawea River track between Albert Town and Hawea.
The track will generally remain open, however machinery will be in use and users are requested to obey signs and directions from contractors.
The work is expected to take two months.
