It's Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu – National Volunteer Week, and we’re taking a moment to celebrate the people who are working hard behind the scenes to make this place what it is.

Across our community, volunteers are planting trees, restoring habitats, protecting native wildlife, growing kai, or showing up wherever a helping hand is needed.

We asked a few of our locals why they volunteer. Some are motivated by a love of the environment, others by a sense of community, the chance to learn something new, or simply an excuse to spend a few hours outside with good people.

If you've got a spare five minutes and a warm cuppa nearby, head to the link below to read about 5 locals getting their hands dirty for local environmental action - we hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as we did.

Because while the challenges can feel big, so is the collective power of people who care about this place.

We’re proud to play a small part in connecting the dots — helping turn local passion into lasting impact.

Here's to rolling up our sleeves, backing good ideas, and leaving this place a little better than we found it.

Our newest Impact Partner likely needs no introduction -

A long-time local and the magic hands behind Sweet Checks, Jennie is a passionate advocate for getting out there and exploring the very best of our region. And sustainability and care for place are never far from mind.

From plastic-free packaging, to compostable refill packs, native planting, and genuinely beautiful local ingredients — sustainability is woven through the Sweet Cheeks story.

Now, Jennie's taking that commitment one step further by joining the growing community of businesses giving back through Love Wānaka.

We’re incredibly grateful to have Sweet Cheeks on board as an Impact Partner, helping fuel grassroots mahi and ensuring our alpine playground thrives long into the future.

Good for your cheeks. Good for te taiao.

Plastic Free Wānaka is on a mission to make Wānaka the first single-use-cup-free town in Aotearoa - and with support from a Love Wānaka Impact Grant, that goal is closer than ever.

The team has been busy: twenty-nine cafes and food spots now run cup-lending schemes or mug libraries, and together they're keeping an estimated 800,000 takeaway cups out of landfill every year. But the mahi doesn't stop there. From hosting Aotearoa's first-ever SUCfree National Hui to trialling a workplace accreditation scheme and rolling out a visitor campaign in partnership with Love Wānaka, this is a community actively building a culture of reuse.

It's a story of grassroots action, local business leadership, and one rohe showing the rest of the country what's possible.
