Turn The Corner is a campaign for Mental Health in the construction industry. By way of connecting more Companies/Trades in the Southern Lakes to the ‘Mates in Construction’ organisation, and to help break the stigma associated with Depression/Mental Health. The ultimate goal above all else is to help prevent unnecessary deaths in the construction industry by offering more education around su***de
prevention and through connecting more tradies to the support they need. On Thursday the 1st of December 2022 I plan to climb Corner Peak, Lake Hawea (1683 m above sea level) 53 times in 53 days. 53 being the average su***de deaths in the construction industry since 2017. I hope to get each day sponsored by Companies/Trades in the construction industry. I will be specifically targeting the Southern Lakes region although it is open to anyone in the industry in New Zealand willing to get involved. Sponsorship is not by way of money but through committing your company to join the Mates in Construction model, have your team inducted into the programme and receive the ‘General awareness training’(GAT). A new study by BRANZ (building research Association of New Zealand) has shown that MATES’ General Awareness Training significantly improved construction workers’ confidence in noticing others’ distress as well as their competence in encouraging co-workers to seek support. In sponsoring a day the company will also join me on a Corner Peak climb, on the day of their choice. This is an opportunity to get your staff off site, and into the hills for a challenging but rewarding day. Weekends will be kept open to the general public who want to support the cause.
