Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust

Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust We are a community native plant nursery based in Wānaka. OUR NAME:
Te Kākano is Māori for the Seed.

We promote and organise community habitat restoration projects and run environmental education programmes. Te Kākano's nursery is nestled in the shelter of an extensive QEII Covenanted kānuka forest near Waterfall Creek on the shores of Lake Wānaka. For Te Kākano this means to plant a seed of environmental stewardship, to help it grow and bear the fruit, to assist other communities to take the see

ds of this fruit and plant them in their own land. OUR MISSION:
To inspire community native habitat restoration through propagation, education and hands-on participation. OUR VISION:
New Zealand communities are more connected with their land.

Te Kākano would like to congratulate Andrew Penniket on the recent launch of his book, Whales, Snails and Lobster Tales, which is being featured at this year's Mountain Film and Book Festival.

Andrew was Te Kākano's Nursery Manager from 2008 to 2019. His dedication, knowledge, and passion played a key role in shaping Te Kākano into the successful organisation it is today.

"Plunge into the deep with underwater cameraman and documentary maker Andrew Penniket; in Whales, Snails and Lobster Tales, he recounts exciting adventures and rare encounters from a lifetime spent filming beneath the waves."

Join Andrew and Sandy Toy, Ross Cullen, Hugh Logan, and Glennys Logan for an evening of extraordinary stories spanning New Zealand's rugged peaks and vibrant oceans.

📅 Sunday 21 June, 5.00pm–6.00pm
📍 Armstrong Room, Lake Wānaka Centre
🎟️ Cost: $25

New Zealand's premier mountain culture event, the NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival, kicks off in Wānaka from 19–23 June!

This five-day festival showcases an inspiring programme of award-winning international and New Zealand films, author talks, guest speakers, book launches, exploring mountains, adventure, and life in the outdoors.

Every year, we are incredibly grateful to receive support from the festival. Since 2013, the NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival has made a donation to support Te Kākano's work.

Part of this donation helps offset the carbon footprint of some of the speakers travelling to the festival, with native plants grown by Te Kākano contributing to this initiative.

You can also see some of our plants and learn more about our work at the festival. Visitors can choose to make a donation when purchasing food or drinks at the festival café, with proceeds supporting Te Kākano.

We can't thank the festival and its supporters enough for their generosity and ongoing support over the years. With a fantastic line up of events, I would book your ticket soon via the website  mountainfilm.nz/

A beautiful day for our "In the Field Nursery" session at Albert Town Lagoon on Wednesday!

Our volunteers focused their efforts on the gully, planting 33 native plants, mulching with leaves, and carrying out some maintenance work. We also tackled a patch of blackberry before finishing up with a well-earned hot cuppa.

Our next In the Field Nursery session will be held at Templeton Park on Wednesday, 24 June. Meet us at 1:00 pm at Templeton Park. Parking is available on Kinibeg Street, Albert Town. We look forward to seeing you there!
