Keeping our community warm this winter! ❄️❤️

Today, we dropped off a massive load of cozy pajamas to the amazing team at the Motueka Family Service Centre for them to distribute to local whānau.

Thanks to the amazing Kindness Collective PJ project initiative, 31 families have been supported, and 78 children will be snuggling up in warm PJs in the Motueka Region! 🧸✨

A huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to the Kindness Collective Foundation for their incredible PJ Project, to The Warehouse Motueka and Motueka community for making this possible. Your generosity is making such a real difference in our community! 🫶

It’s National Volunteer Week and we’d love your help celebrating our incredible team!

When you pop into Helping Families Nelson this week, please take a moment to say a warm thank you to our volunteers. They give their time and energy to help every family who walks through our gates.

A smile, a kind word, or a simple “we appreciate you” goes a long way.

To all our volunteers — our community is a better place because of you. 💛

Having a clean out this weekend?

Thank You & A Gentle Reminder

First and foremost, we want to say a massive thank you to everyone who thinks of us and takes the time to donate. Your generosity is what keeps us going and we love being able to pass on your wonderful pre-loved items to local families while keeping waste out of landfills.

However, we need to have a really honest conversation about the condition of some recent donations.

While we hate turning people away or sounding ungrateful, we are experiencing a influx of items that are damaged, dirty or completely broken. Sadly, we simply do not have the funding or the resources to pay for rubbish disposal.

Recently, we have received:
🛑 Prams with punctures/holes in the tyres
🛑 Broken baby equipment
🛑 Mouldy items
🛑 Cot Mattresses heavily smelling of smoke
🛑 Toys that no longer work, are broken or are missing parts

The safety, health and dignity of our tamariki and families are our absolute priority. Passing on items that are unsafe or unhygienic goes against everything we stand for.

Before you drop off your next donation, please take a quick moment to ensure it is clean, safe, complete, and ready to be loved by another family.

Thank you so much for your understanding, your ongoing support and for helping us keep our community safe and thriving!

💛 Honouring a Little Life With Love 💛

Today we were contacted by a local parent who wanted to do something incredibly special. As their son’s 6th birthday approaches, they chose to honour his memory by donating a birthday gift to a child in need.

No names, no spotlight — just pure kindness.

Gestures like this remind us how powerful a community can be. One child remembered, another child celebrated!

We’re humbled to help make this happen.

And if anyone else ever wishes to mark a birthday, anniversary or special date by supporting a local child, our doors are always open.

We’re growing our governance team!

Helping Families Nelson is looking for a few motivated people to join our Board and help guide the future of our mahi. We support whānau across Nelson and Tasman who are experiencing genuine financial hardship, providing essential items like clothing, bedding, school uniforms, shoes, household goods and baby equipment.

Our kaupapa is grounded in compassion, fairness and practical action. We’re looking for people who value integrity, collaboration and community led solutions.

With a fulltime Manager now in place and recent reviews of our operations and policies completed, we’re ready to strengthen our governance and bring in new voices and skills. Demand for our support continues to grow, and strong governance will help us respond strategically and sustainably.

If you’re looking to grow your governance capability, or you’re keen to contribute your experience to a meaningful local cause, we’d love to hear from you. You’ll be joining a collaborative and supportive board committed to mentoring emerging governors.

We ask that all donated items are in good, clean condition.
Unfortunately, some donations have included dirty, mouldy, ripped, and even rodent‑infected clothing, which we’ve had to dispose of. As a small charitable organisation, we simply don’t have the funds to cover the cost of waste disposal.

Thank you for helping us keep donations safe, respectful, and useful for local families.
