Age Concern Nelson Tasman Serving the needs of older people in the Nelson Tasman region

Age Concern Nelson is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a variety of services to older people across the wider Nelson Tasman region. We offer information, support, advice, advocacy and educational services, as well as encouraging and celebrating positive ageing. Two of our key services are the Elder Abuse Neglect Prevention (EANP) Service and the Accredited Visitor Service (AVS). We also administer the Taxi Mobility Scheme, and deliver educational and lifestyle workshops on healthy eating, safe driving and capturing life stories.

We’re taking part in Cyber Smart Week (5-11 October) to help our people build cyber-smart habits and strengthen our cyber resilience

DAY FIVE: Protect Home base
Cyber security doesn’t stop when you leave the office. (Who else is listening to you?)
When you’re at home, your work laptop shares a network with your phone, TV, smart speakers and other connected devices. Keeping that network secure helps protect both home and work.

Here’s how you can secure your home Wi-Fi:
• Change your router’s default password to a long, strong and unique passphrase
• Keep your router and connected devices updated
• Consider using a guest network for visitors and smart devices
• Being cyber smart is a good habit, wherever you are.

DAY FOUR: Keep it current
Putting off that update? Don’t. Cyber criminals look for weaknesses in outdated
software to get into your devices, and AI is helping them find and exploit those weaknesses faster than ever.

Updates help close those gaps by fixing known security vulnerabilities.
Turn on automatic updates for your devices, apps and browsers, so you get the latest security fixes as soon as they’re available.

Stay current. Stay protected.

DAY THREE: Keep it to yourself
Scams thrive on sensitive information. The less cybercriminals can find, the less they can use against you or your loved ones. (This selfie is sharing more than an office friendship!)

Not everything needs to be shared. Check who can see your social media, and think carefully before giving sensitive information to an AI tool.
• Check your social media privacy settings
• Think before sharing sensitive information with AI tools
• Before you post or paste, ask: would I be happy if this became public?

The more scammers know about you, the easier you are to target.
Remember, scammers can’t use information they don’t have.

DAY TWO: Don't take the bait
Can you spot the scam? (Sorry, it’s not really Brad Pitt)

AI is making scams more convincing than ever, so treat any unexpected request as suspicious.

Think before you click:
• Check who the message is really from
• Be wary of unexpected or urgent requests.
