Earlier this week on The Inclusive Faith Podcast we challenged a very common claim: that the Bible, and Jesus himself, defines marriage as exclusively between one man and one woman. The flood of responses to that episode has made it clear that the biblical case behind our argument needed a fuller treatment.
So today we've published a new article: “A Biblical Case for Same-Sex Marriage: Marriage Was God’s Answer to Loneliness.”
This article goes directly into Genesis 2 and Matthew 19. Genesis does describe a man and a woman, but description is not the same as prescription or definition. In Genesis 2, the problem God resolved wasn't childlessness or the need for reproduction, it was human aloneness: “It is not good for the human to be alone.”
And when Jesus quotes Genesis in Matthew 19, he is answering a question about divorce, not prescribe the confines of marriage or defining the permissible s*x of marriage partners. His conclusion is not, “Marriage is only between one man and one woman.” It's: “What God has joined together, let no one separate.”
