The Curtain Bank is on a mission to ensure local homes have effective curtains to keep homes warmer in winter.

Started by Claire McKenzie (pictured) and a small team of dedicated volunteers in 2024, the Curtain Bank collects donations of good-quality second-hand curtains and tracks. The team then sorts, cuts, and sews these to fit in homes referred by health and social service agencies.

With support from Tasman District Council, the Curtain Bank has recently moved into new premises at the Hope Domain.

The team is looking for volunteers to help with collecting, sorting, measuring, cutting and sewing donated curtains, and updating their social media – no prior experience required.

They meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10.00 am – 3.00 pm. If you’d like to lend a hand, contact Claire at [email protected].

Curtains and home insulation go hand in hand – if you have one but not the other, you’re likely to have a cold home.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority and Warmer Healthier Homes Te Tauihu Charitable Trust provide grants for home insulation and heaters to properties that meet specific criteria.

You may qualify for a grant to cover the costs of installing insulation and/or a heat pump if you own your own home, it was built before 2008, and you have a community services card OR live in a lower-income area.

Contact Absolute Energy to find out if you qualify for a grant on 0800 423 454.

Women of Nelson and Tasman!
Are you in search of a home to share with another woman or have a spare room in your house that you would like to offer? We have 38 homes listed on our website www.homeshareforher.nz and 36 seekers looking for a room currently. This service is for women only who are 18+.

Please remember you are responsible for doing your own reference checks and making sure to meet in a public place for your first meeting of each other. A not-for-profit organisation that aims to help women connect and find homes in Nelson Tasman has benefited to the tune of $3,000 from our Community Grants scheme.

Home Share for Her is designed for women with the aim of enabling them to make connections with each other to address their housing needs.

A series of workshops and talks in 2022 aimed to tackle the housing crisis in Tasman and Nelson. During that series, it became evident that the greater proportion of those struggling to find suitable and affordable accommodation were women.

Half of those living alone were older women, some struggling to maintain a larger home, some needing help in the home, and some experiencing financial hardship and loneliness.

From this, with the support of Community Action Nelson and Nelson’s Women Centre, Home Share for Her Trust was born.

The website portal gives women the tools to talk to each other, make connections, and offer each other affordable home-sharing solutions.

The online process is simple. A home seeker creates a profile when they sign up, then they can browse the website for a homeowner’s listing, and the pair can then be matched.

Home Share for Her was nurtured into being by women who understand how important it is to have a safe, secure home and feel connected.

To all our Homeshare Community,
We have recently heard from a number of women who have made arrangements to home share quickly and then have experienced some challenging, issues living together. While we understand that some people have a short time in which to find somewhere, or really need to have a flat mate to help with costs, we really want to emphasize how important it is to do your due diligence before moving in. We highly recommend meeting each other in a public place first, asking for references from their previous housing situations and/or a character reference, and being sure to ask a lot of questions regarding their lifestyle so you can work out if you will be compatible. While these checks may not be a failsafe, it does reduce the chance of something not working out with your home share arrangement.
If you are unsure what to ask, we have got a resources page on our website that has some examples of questions to ask and agreement templates https://homeshareforher.nz/resources. We do not perform these checks ourselves; this is the responsibility of the homeowner and home seeker. Please reach out to us if you need help or guidance on our email [email protected]
