60 YEARS OF THE PILGRIMS 🇳🇿🥎

On 6 October 1966, New Zealand’s first men’s national softball team to travel overseas left Auckland, beginning a journey through Hawaii, Los Angeles, Prescott, San Antonio and Houston, before arriving in Mexico City for the inaugural Men’s World Softball Championship.

Known as The Pilgrims, the team was coached by Alf Whelan and captained by Dave McKerchar. When the World Championship began on 23 October 1966, the team made history, finishing third and securing New Zealand’s first-ever men’s softball World Championship medal.

Facing unfamiliar challenges including international travel, playing under lights, skinned diamonds and Mexico City’s altitude, the Pilgrims helped establish New Zealand on the world softball stage.

60 years on, Softball New Zealand celebrates these pioneers and the legacy they created — laying the foundations for generations of Black Sox and New Zealand’s remarkable international softball history.
