Awesome day at Lake Rotoroa supporting Te Ahurei a Rangatahi with their youth week action! Good koorero with lots of young people about what matters to them and also talking about restoring the lake! Some did not know that people used to swim in the lake, but a lot had heard stories from their parents and grandparents.

Also, great to see Tim Macindoe for Mayor of Hamilton supporting our youth and also cleaning up the lake!

A small group of us had a fun walk around the lake today with some rubbish pickers! There were obvious hot spots where primarily plastic rubbish accumulates. Some rubbish (like the red lid rubbish bin) was too big to get but we will figure out a way!

Huge thanks to the Manawa Dragons for joining us!! Together we can create a healthy lake!!

Huge thanks to the awesome volunteers who helped release the plants yesterday. We are meeting again in a month’s time (March 28th, 3-4pm), and are looking for more community-spirited volunteers to join us!

Planting around Lake Rotoroa helps to restore biodiversity while also forming natural filter that helps slow the flow of pollutants and excess nutrients into the lake. And we are building community at the same time!

These plants are parts of a wider initiative of solutions that together are working towards protecting the lake, restoring its ecological value, and enhancing its enjoyment by all Hamiltonians.

Kia ora koutou,

Come along to our community plant releasing event this afternoon, 3-4pm!

We’ll be releasing the plants we put in late 2024 by pulling weeds away from them — simple mahi, big impact.

Meet at Innes Common Car park and then walk to the planted area south along the boardwalk access location between 116 - 122 Lake Crescent.

Please wear covered shoes, long sleeved shirt and trousers suitable for restoration mahi.

We’d love to see you there!

Kia ora koutou – an update from this week’s Whakamana ki Rotoroa meeting on restoring Lake Rotoroa.

Some of our advocacy group (see pic) met to look at practical ways to improve water quality and protect the long-term health of the lake. We heard about Council’s recent actions – including new monitoring systems, geese management, and sump filter upgrades.

A few key topics covered:
• Stormwater and catch pits: Stormwater is still the biggest source of contaminants. Modern sump upgrades would be beneficial.
• Floating wetlands & artwork: A proposal for floating wetlands – which help clean the water – alongside an art installation.
• Waterfowl impacts: Ducks and geese significantly affect bacteria levels. A summer student research project is proposed to understand patterns and support better management.
• Integrated restoration strategy: Whakamana ki Rotoroa wants to see a coordinated plan combining catchment, near-lake and in-lake actions.

It’s great to see community energy and expertise coming together.

The group is providing feedback to Council. If you would like to join the network - get in touch. Our email is [email protected] or you can message us.

Working together, we can restore the mauri of Lake Rotoroa!
