𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 – 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐔𝐬

What can nature teach us about healthy, unhealthy, and everyday relationships?
This week at Toastmasters, we explored Symbiotic Relationships — the fascinating ways living things interact with each other in nature, and how these patterns mirror our own lives. Here are the key takeaways:

🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟏: “𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬”
🌱 Symbiosis describes close relationships between different species
✔️ Some relationships help both sides
✔️ Some benefit only one
✔️ Some come at a cost
🔹 Not all relationships are created equal.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟐: “𝐌𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 – 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰”
🐝 Bees and flowers: nectar exchanged for pollination
🐠 Clownfish and sea anemones: protection for cleaning and nutrients
🐺 Wolves and ravens: teamwork in hunting and sharing food
🔹 The healthiest relationships help both sides thrive.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟑: “𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 – 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐡𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬”
🐋 Barnacles on whales get a free ride — whales are unaffected
🐄 Cattle egrets follow grazing animals for easy meals
🦈 Remora fish travel with sharks and eat leftovers
🔹 Sometimes relationships are one‑sided, and that’s okay.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟒: “𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐦 – 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐬”
🦟 Mosquitos feed on mammals, causing harm
🐟 Lampreys drain fish of blood and energy
🌿 Dodder plants steal nutrients and can kill their host
🔹 Unhealthy relationships drain more than they give.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟓: “𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞”
✅ Healthy relationships look like mutualism
⚠️ Unhealthy ones leave you depleted
🧭 It’s okay to help occasionally — but choose wisely
🔹 Growth comes from balance and contribution.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟔: “𝐓𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐌𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦”
🎤 Members grow as speakers and leaders
🤝 Support, feedback, and encouragement flow both ways
🌟 A safe environment where everyone benefits
🔹 When we grow together, we grow stronger.
💬 What kind of relationships are you cultivating — in life, work, and communication?

𝐔𝐧𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞𝐬 – 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥

How often do our thoughts shape our emotions without us even realising it?

A recent Toastmasters presentation explored how automatic thoughts influence our feelings and behaviour — and how recognising unhelpful thinking patterns can improve our emotional wellbeing. Here are the key takeaways:

🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟏: “𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥”
🧠 We have hundreds of automatic thoughts every day
✅ Thoughts can be positive, negative, or neutral
⚠️ Not every thought is accurate or helpful
🔹 Biased thinking can lead to anxiety, stress, and low mood.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟐: “𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠”
😰 Jumping to the worst‑case scenario
❓ Asking “What if…?” and assuming disaster is likely
🔹 Awareness helps us pause before panic takes over.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟑: “𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠”
💭 “It must be true because I feel it”
⚠️ Letting emotions drive conclusions instead of facts
🔹 Feelings are real — but they aren’t always reliable.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟒: “𝐉𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬”
🤔 Making snap judgments with limited information
🗣️ Assuming you know what others are thinking
🔹 Curiosity is more helpful than assumptions.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟓: “𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟‑𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞”
⚖️ Taking responsibility for things outside your control
💔 Being overly critical of yourself
🔹 Self‑compassion is a powerful mindset shift.
🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟔: “𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐧𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠”
🔍 Examine how truthful your thoughts really are
🔄 Look for counter‑evidence
👀 Consider other perspectives
🌍 Step back and see the bigger picture
🔹 Changing how we think can change how we feel.
💬 Becoming aware of unhelpful thinking styles helps us respond with clarity instead of reacting with emotion.

What separates a “good” speech from a contest‑winning one?
A recent Toastmasters-style learning session revealed powerful strategies used by top speakers — practical, simple, and proven to impress audiences and judges.
Here are the key insights:

🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟏: 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞
🎯 Winning speeches are built around one clear, memorable idea
✔️ Ask: “What is the one message I want them to remember?”
✔️ Examples turn vague ideas into punchy truths
🔹 Simplicity makes your message unforgettable.

🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟐: 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬
📘 Judges look for clarity, flow, and development
✔️ Strong opening → engaging body → memorable conclusion
✔️ Stories and examples strengthen each key point
🔹 Great speeches feel like a journey with a purpose.

🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟑: 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞
❤️ Stories create emotional connection — and emotional connection wins
✔️ Use real experiences, moments of struggle, lessons learned
✔️ Simple framework: Situation → Challenge → Lesson
🔹 Emotion makes your message stick.

🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟒: 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞
💡 A great speech doesn’t just entertain — it teaches
✔️ Life lessons
✔️ Mindset shifts
✔️ Practical strategies
🔹 Your audience should leave thinking differently.

🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟓: 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞
🖼️ Strong visuals, repetition, and short sentences add power
✔️ “My heart was pounding like a drum.”
✔️ “Stand up. Speak up. Show up.”
🔹 Language is 20% of the judging criteria — make every word count.

🟦 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝟔: 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠
🎤 Winning speeches sound natural, conversational, and rhythmic
✔️ Avoid long academic sentences
✔️ Aim for clarity, impact, and flow
🔹 A speech should feel alive when spoken aloud.

🌟 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭
Great speeches aren’t accidental — they are designed to move minds, touch hearts, and inspire action.
Your next speech could be the one people remember.

🌟 The Energy You Bring – Why It Matters More Than You Think 🌟

At Toastmasters, we focus not just on the speaker — but on the audience. The energy you bring into a room has the power to lift, steady, or shape the entire experience. Our recent session explored how each of us influences the room, and how simple behaviours can transform a speaker’s confidence and delivery.

Here are the key highlights:

🟧 Eye Contact
Being present with your eyes shows attentiveness and warmth. A steady, gentle gaze helps speakers feel seen — and in some cultures, less eye contact can even be a sign of respect.
Message: I see you.
🟧 Nod
A nod, a smile, or a quiet “mm” can reassure a speaker instantly. It signals that you’re engaged, listening, and with them — even if you’re not necessarily agreeing.
Message: I’m with you.
🟧 Environment
The room shapes how safe people feel. Where we sit and how the space is arranged can support or hinder the energy in the room. Different cultures thrive in different environments — lively or calm.
Message: Where we are matters.
🟧 Read the Room
Pay attention to body language, reactions, and energy levels. Adjusting how you respond helps create a more dynamic interaction. Not everyone receives energy the same way.
Message: Who we are shapes how we engage.
🟧 Genuine Engagement
Lean in mentally and emotionally. Listen for meaning, not mistakes. Engagement can be expressive or quiet — both are valid.
Message: I’m fully present.
🟧 Yourself
Be a real audience — not just a polite one. Your authentic reactions contribute to the speaker’s experience. Every style of engagement belongs.
Message: I’m here as me; you can be you.
🎉 Why It Matters
We become better speakers when we become better participants.
You are responsible for the energy you bring.
