With the weather cooling down and most of the summer weeds sorted, the team is hard at work planting! 🌱

We have put 200 Kahikatea’s in the ground to fill some gaps so keep an eye out for our bright orange stakes (2024 colour).

Have a great week everybody!

Kia Ora everyone!

We’ve been busy working away in the gully as we try to stay on top of the summer weeds which are in full swing!

While working we’ve spotted a few juvenile birds learning how to fly in the canopy.
Here’s a photo of a fantail trying to look brave in front of his friends 🐦 💪🏼

Mōrena everybody,

Recently we have noticed some illegal eeling being done in the gully. We found a trap with a live eel still inside.

Please be aware that it is illegal to catch eels/other fish in Hamilton’s parks, reserves and domains. The streams that flow through Mangaiti Gully are all part of our restoration programme which has an aim of restoring our indigenous biodiversity back into the gully system. We have a range of native freshwater species, some of which are threatened, so it is very important that all these are protected.

If you see any of this going on, please contact the council on 07 838 6699.

Have a good week.

Kia ora everyone,

You might notice on your next visit, the Tī Kōuka (aka cabbage trees) are in flower.
They produce a lovely aroma and over the next two months they'll form fruit that may be pale blue or white in color.

We hope you all have a great weekend,

Kia Ora and happy Friday!

We’re so pleased to be seeing (and hearing) a consistent population of Kingfishers/Kōtare in the gully. They love to perch up high and can often be spotted on the tall, pale trunks of the old willow trees dotted throughout Mangaiti.
Here’s some of our recent Kōtare sightings.

Unfamiliar with the call of Kōtare? Here’s a link so you can familiarise yourself and hopefully identify one on your next visit to Mangaiti Gully 🐦🌿

Mōrena everybody,

We are beginning to see a lot more colour in the gully again now that we are in the middle of Spring. The Tui’s have been loving the nectar 🐦

Mōrena everybody,

Hope everyone has had a great week. We received an email from a gully regular, Scott Wehipeihana, who took these amazing photos in Mangaiti.

You can see Fantails, Tui’s and some other birds. We have captioned each photo with the bird name.

Have a good afternoon!

Well spring is well and truly upon us.
We were lucky enough to spy 3 Tuis feeding on some harakeke flowers this week, what a sight!

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

**Dirty post alert**

Kia ora everyone,
Just making a post to all dog owners/walkers.
If you're coming through the gully, please take your dogs dropping with you, don't just bag them up and throw into the gully.
Our team covers every square inch looking for invasive and exotic weeds, and don't appreciate finding rubbish full of animal waste.
We thank you for your understanding.

Kia ora everyone,

We are just letting you know we are doing a flyer drop to provide information on the dreaded Woolly nightshade, as they are a very invasive and toxic species.
We are currently managing the nightshades in the gully, but If you have any on your property (within 50m to shared boundary to the gully) they need to be removed, if would like help removing them, please let us know.

We really appreciate all your efforts in helping us keep invasive species out of the gully!

For anyone also wanting extra information, here is the link to flyer we are dropping.

Mōrena everybody,

Does anybody know who owns this cat? It is important we keep cats away from Mangaiti (or if this can’t be done, that they are wearing a bell) as they are significant predators and kill native wildlife.

Have a good week,
JFN Team
