Great to see this collaborative effort in the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor, with Conservation Volunteers NZ, Bupa, Ao Tawhiti students and local volunteers all getting stuck in together. 🌱

🌱 Five planting days, 2,122 native plants!

That’s a wrap on this year’s Junior Landcare planting days in the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.

Our fifth and final planting day was held recently, bringing to a close a fantastic series of community planting events. Across the five days, more than 2,500 native trees and plants have been put in the ground, helping restore habitat and biodiversity within this special part of Christchurch.

A huge thank you to Conservation Volunteers NZ for organising and delivering the planting days and bringing together such a great mix of young people, volunteers and community members.

We were also very grateful to have the Gordon Scout Group
join us and lend a hand with the planting — a great example of young people getting stuck into practical conservation.

Thanks also to Bupa NZ for supporting this work through the New Zealand Landcare Trust Junior Landcare programme, helping young people get involved in practical conservation and experience first-hand what restoring our environment is all about.

Thanks to everyone who picked up a spade, planted a tree and helped make the five days such a success. 🌱

🌱 Planning native planting for 2027? Trees That Count applications close 15 September.

That Count is currently accepting applications for native tree funding for the 2027 planting season. Projects need to involve at least 500 native plants and applicants should have a well-developed planting, pest-control and maintenance plan.

This could be a great opportunity for Canterbury landowners, farmers, catchment groups, community groups, iwi/hapū and restoration projects planning larger-scale native planting next year.

New case study: Australasian bittern / matuku-hūrepo in Canterbury

The Australasian bittern (matuku-hūrepo) is one of New Zealand’s most threatened wetland birds, making ongoing monitoring and protection of its wetland habitat particularly important.

With the bittern booming season coming up this spring, it’s a timely opportunity to listen out for their distinctive booming calls and build a better picture of bittern presence across Canterbury.

Our latest NZ Landcare Trust case study looks at what we know about bittern in the region, the importance of protecting and restoring wetland habitat, and opportunities to improve our understanding through further monitoring and collaboration with landowners, catchment groups and others working across Canterbury.
