In light of our commitment to share some special stories with you before we close the Trust later this year, it is truly an honour to share John Coopman’s journey.
John was a real character who was deeply loved by all those who had the pleasure to know him.
In the words of daughter Mikeila. “Our Dad, John Coopman, who is known to some as Papa-Coops, JC or Johnny, to others, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer that is growing in his liver, abdomen, stomach, lungs and lymph-nodes. Dad is now focused on spending the precious time he has left with his children, family & friends. He enjoys hanging out with his babies, fishing, cooking for his friends and much more. This humorous and much loved, 53 year old, is father to my 3 siblings and me.”
It was delightful to work with the family and to give John the opportunity to fulfil his wish.
Originally, John had a whole host of different wishes he was considering. In the end, however, his health dictated what would be possible.
After many conversations, it became clear that John’s greatest wish was to hire a suit and celebrate his life and family, knowing he would not be there for future milestones, such as his children’s weddings. His daughter, Mikeila, played an instrumental role in working with Race4Life to ensure her dad’s wish became a reality
In August 2021, family and friends gathered to celebrate John. They came bearing gifts and full of love. With a ‘formal’ theme, everyone dressed to the nines to honour this much-loved man. John had an absolutely wonderful time on his special day.
Local caterers provided the food and beverages, and no celebration would be complete without a cake. With just one day’s notice, Race4Life volunteer Ellie Lindsay created a cake fit for a king. Professional photographer Sarah Weber captured beautiful images of the occasion, leaving the family with lasting and treasured memories. Frank Casey’s Suit Hire generously donated a stunning suit for John to wear—an act of kindness that was deeply appreciated.
This special celebration was cherished by all who attended, made even more poignant by the fact that John sadly declined over the course of the weekend and passed away peacefully two days later.
There is, however, a small twist to this story that always brings a smile to our faces! When the family was later contacted about returning the hired suit, a misunderstanding came to light regarding the attire John was to be buried in. Suffice to say, Frank Casey never did get that suit back.
A huge thank you to all those who helped to make this day possible:
