Race 4 Life Trust Race4Life Trust is an New Zealand based Not for Profit organization.

The aim of Race4LifeTrust is to enable people, living with life limiting illness, to realise dreams that they, and their families can cherish. Our mission is to seek to provide people, with the means to fulfil their wishes and therefore everything we do, will be driving towards the wherewithal, to make it happen. In order to do this well and appropriately, we will make sure that we avidly listen and that we come from a position of integrity, perseverance, understanding and respect.

In light of our commitment to share some special stories with you before we close the Trust later this year, it is truly an honour to share John Coopman’s journey.

John was a real character who was deeply loved by all those who had the pleasure to know him.

In the words of daughter Mikeila. “Our Dad, John Coopman, who is known to some as Papa-Coops, JC or Johnny, to others, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer that is growing in his liver, abdomen, stomach, lungs and lymph-nodes. Dad is now focused on spending the precious time he has left with his children, family & friends. He enjoys hanging out with his babies, fishing, cooking for his friends and much more. This humorous and much loved, 53 year old, is father to my 3 siblings and me.”

It was delightful to work with the family and to give John the opportunity to fulfil his wish.

Originally, John had a whole host of different wishes he was considering. In the end, however, his health dictated what would be possible.

After many conversations, it became clear that John’s greatest wish was to hire a suit and celebrate his life and family, knowing he would not be there for future milestones, such as his children’s weddings. His daughter, Mikeila, played an instrumental role in working with Race4Life to ensure her dad’s wish became a reality

In August 2021, family and friends gathered to celebrate John. They came bearing gifts and full of love. With a ‘formal’ theme, everyone dressed to the nines to honour this much-loved man. John had an absolutely wonderful time on his special day.

Local caterers provided the food and beverages, and no celebration would be complete without a cake. With just one day’s notice, Race4Life volunteer Ellie Lindsay created a cake fit for a king. Professional photographer Sarah Weber captured beautiful images of the occasion, leaving the family with lasting and treasured memories. Frank Casey’s Suit Hire generously donated a stunning suit for John to wear—an act of kindness that was deeply appreciated.

This special celebration was cherished by all who attended, made even more poignant by the fact that John sadly declined over the course of the weekend and passed away peacefully two days later.

There is, however, a small twist to this story that always brings a smile to our faces! When the family was later contacted about returning the hired suit, a misunderstanding came to light regarding the attire John was to be buried in. Suffice to say, Frank Casey never did get that suit back.

A huge thank you to all those who helped to make this day possible:

With the forthcoming closure of the Race4Life Trust later this year, we want to take a moment to reflect on and celebrate some of the truly incredible wishes that have been granted over the years—each one a powerful reminder of the hope, compassion, and lasting impact the Trust has brought to so many lives 💙

One such wish was for Amlakie, who originally came from Ethiopia and was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. A devoted mother to her beautiful 7-year-old daughter, Bethania, Amlakie’s greatest wish was to have her sister, Alemtshay, travel from Ethiopia to New Zealand—to care for her during her illness and to help look after her young daughter.

When Race4Life reached out, Malcolm from Pacific Immigration stepped in with generosity and heart. Lawyer Ben Hasard worked tirelessly over several months on Alemtshay’s visa application, navigating complex challenges and gathering difficult documentation. He ultimately submitted the application directly to the Minister of Immigration—entirely free of charge.

Throughout this journey, we were also supported by Dr Alison Booth in her role as JP, along with Amlakie’s son, Tadios, whose ongoing help meant so much along the way.

This wish brought immeasurable joy, comfort, and hope to Amlakie and her family. The impact of this kindness is beyond words, and we are deeply grateful to everyone involved in making it possible.

In 2022, we had the privilege of welcoming Amlakie, Alemstshay, Bethania and Tadios to the Race4Life Annual Track Day—a special day filled with smiles, connection, and cherished memories. Please take a moment to look through the photos of them enjoying this beautiful experience.

We feel incredibly honoured to have been part of something so meaningful. A truly special wish, and one we will never forget ✨

As you know Race4Life wish service has been closed since May 2023.

Every now and again people do contact us to see whether we might lend a helping hand.

Sam and Nash are a couple that we have reached out to .

Nash is suffering from Stage 4 Re**al cancer. This gorgeous couple who are respectively from Singapore and Turkey have used every bit of their savings to pay for the unfunded treatment needed for Nash.

They now have a shortfall of $65K that will buy them time and some quality of life to create some memories. They share a son and a history of non acceptance within their own cultures.

If you feel you would like to donate to Nash’s medical costs it would be so appreciated.

Below is the GiveALittle page reference, that will give you more insight into their situation.

Thank you very much

Watching Nash fight Stage 4 re**al cancer breaks my heart, please help me support her ongoing treatment and give her the strength and hope.

What an absolutely huge week!

The Targa New Zealand 30th anniversary was full on. So much preparation involved in staging this event on so many levels!! The efficient work of the URG team was evident throughout the event especially with last minute changes, unexpected events, and cancellation of stages, due to weather and road conditions. A huge thank you to Peter Martin and his URG crew for the privilege and opportunity of being the chosen charity for this event.

It was very humbling to witness the loyalty and empathy shown by all the crews in their support of our wonderful cause. Throughout the week we managed to raise just under $27K. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!

2025 marked the 17th Anniversary of the Race4Life Track Day held a Hampton Downs Raceway in the Waikato.

Hampton Downs is one of New Zealand’s premier motorsport and it’s the ultimate playground for adrenaline seekers. We had over 100 adrenaline seeking patients and their families who descended on this state of the art venue on Tuesday September 30th.

The images really say it all, as does the footage recorded on the day.

Check out https://race4life.org.nz/event/hampton-downs-track-day-2025/
In the next little while additional images and videos will be added to this collection.

It is rather sensational to know that this event has grown from 17 patients, 23 racing cars and the Roast Beef Company in 2008 to the event it is today.

We have over 50 loyal sponsors who provide financial support or services on the day. Plus there are a huge group of stalwarts who have attended every year, living proof that, "It is in giving that we truly receive".

A beautiful display of humanity at its best.

Due to the generosity and loyalty of 14 businesses in Queenstown we were able to put together this awesome raffle prize. A huge thank you to all those who bought a ticket on the day. $6k was generated. This really is phenomenal and it has such a huge impact on our ability to keep these amazing days thriving.

The most exciting news.... the winner! Meet Mike Barker from Rotorua Hospice. Mike was gifted the prize package by his friend Hux whose name was actually drawn. Together we will be planning a simply sensational trip to Queenstown to gather some cherished memories for Mike and his good friend Hux.
