Greenpeace Aotearoa

Greenpeace Aotearoa Authorised by Greenpeace Aotearoa, 11 Akiraho Street, Auckland Greenpeace's work is based on a number of key principles. And we mean any money.

They are reflected in all our campaigns, and they guide whatever we do, wherever we do it. Personal responsibility and Nonviolence
We take personal responsibility for our actions, and we are committed to nonviolence. These principles are inspired by the Quaker concept of 'bearing witness', which is about taking action based on conscience – personal action based on personal responsibility. We are a

ccountable for our actions, and everyone on a Greenpeace action is trained in nonviolent direct action. Independence
We ensure our financial independence from political or commercial interests. We do not accept money from either companies or governments. Individual contributions, together with foundations grants, are the only source of our funding. Our independence gives us the authority we need to effectively tackle power, and make real change happen. Greenpeace has no permanent friends or foes
In exposing threats to the environment and finding solutions we have no permanent allies or adversaries. If your government or company is willing to change we will work with you to achieve your aims. Dither, backtrack or turn around and we will be back. What matters isn’t words, but actions, and, as far as we’re concerned, there’s only one standard in this: The environment has to benefit. Promoting solutions
We seek solutions for, and promote open, informed debate about society's environmental choices. We don’t work to manage environmental problems, we work to eliminate them. That’s why we developed our roadmap to save the seas through the establishment of marine reserves, and an Energy [R]evolution blueprint that points the way to a clean economy. It’s not enough for us to point the finger; we develop, research and promote concrete steps towards a green and peaceful future for all of us. HOUSE RULES:

Aotearoa is NOT for sale! 🌿

Christopher Luxon is trying to open the door to selling off millions of hectares of public conservation land.

The ancient forests, mountain peaks, wetlands and wild places of Aotearoa could be sold to foreign mining corporations and billionaires.

Once they’re mined, logged or sold off, we can’t get them back.

The fishing industry are keen to sell their "sustainable" line but the real cost of bottom trawling says otherwise. Thousands of dead seabirds, hundreds of dead fur seals and tonnes of destroyed coral - in just one full fishing year.

If the industry and government really cared about sustainability they would commit to banning bottom trawling from where it does the most harm.

Aotearoa has lost one of its musical icons with the passing of Jools Topp in the weekend.

Jools was an outspoken advocate on the issues close to her heart such as the Springbok tour protests, anti nuclear campaign and homosexual law reform.

She was a staunch advocate for the environment. Jools supported and collaborated with Greenpeace over the years, including protesting against the then-government’s plans to drill for deep sea oil.

Our thoughts are with Lynda and their whānau at this time of loss.

Right now, the Government is undermining our independent foreign policy by allowing New Zealand to be pulled into US-led wars, and even negotiating a minerals deal that would sell off our natural places to fuel these conflicts.

This is why Anti-War Aotearoa and Greenpeace Aotearoa are calling on people from Auckland to meet in Aotea Square for a massive March for Peace.

Together, we are demanding that the Government prioritises people and the planet by standing behind these core demands:

Stop Supporting US-Led Wars: No deployment of New Zealand troops, intelligence, or military assets to wars of aggression.

Condemn the Attack on Iran: The Government must openly condemn the illegal US-Israeli attack on Iran, which has caused massive global instability.

Reject War Minerals Deals: Stop all negotiations with the Trump administration that fuel overseas conflicts and threaten Aotearoa's environment.

Sanctions for Gaza: Implement immediate, meaningful sanctions on Israel to help end the genocide, and fully back the ICC and ICJ cases against war crimes.

The fight for a safe environment and the fight for world peace are fundamentally linked. It is time for Aotearoa to return to a truly independent foreign policy based on diplomacy, international law, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Let’s be a brave voice of reason in the world once again.

Stand shoulder to shoulder with us for nature, peace, democracy, and Te Tiriti.

Our take on the Fisheries Amendment Bill. We’ve been outspoken against this piece of proposed legislation or “Ocean Destruction Bill” and calling for it to be rejected in its entirety.

Ocean campaigner Ellie Hooper made a submission to the Select Committee this week. Our position was clear: the bill is rotten and must be stopped.

We need more protection for the ocean - including a ban on bottom trawling from where it does the most harm.

Petrol and diesel prices are surging, fuel shortages are looming, and power bills are climbing. We're officially in a fuel crisis.

Here's Russel Norman to explain how this has happened - and what the Government should be doing to ensure that everybody can heat their homes and get to work without it costing the earth.

Today Greenpeace campaigner Juressa Lee was at Parliament to deliver our 26,000 strong petition urging Luxon to say no to a minerals deal with Trump.

Luxon wouldn't accept our petition, but Labour Party spokesperson for Energy and Resources Megan Woods accepted the petition to present to Parliament. MPs from the Green Party and Te Pāti Māori were also present.

The minerals deal is a threat to our environment, our security and our democracy.

People power works. Our movement stopped seabed mining in its tracks - we’ll stop this deal too.

Together we refuse complicity in US war- mongering. We say no to a minerals deal.

With fuel prices over $3 a litre and the Budget just days away, we put the major political parties to the test on their plans to tackle the fuel crisis with practical solutions to cut dependence on imported fossil fuels and shield households from oil and gas price shocks.

The Coalition Government flunked the test. Labour sat firmly on the fence. The Greens, Te Pāti Māori, and Opportunity scored highly, backing real, clean energy solutions with firm and concrete commitments.

The trillion-dollar oil and gas industry is driving the cost of living and climate crises, making it harder for everyday people to get by while their dirty fossil fuels supercharge the storms damaging our communities and environment.
But the good news is that there are proven solutions already being rolled out around the world, like rooftop solar and free public transport. Our scorecard shows which political parties plan to ramp up those solutions here and which are choosing to double down on fossil fuels.

Please take a few seconds to hit SHARE right now. Let’s send a massive, collective warning to every politician and political party: Voters are watching, we know what the clean energy solutions are, and we expect politicians to deliver them.

P.S. Greenpeace is an independent environmental campaigning organisation. We do not take money from political parties or corporations, and we never tell people how to vote. We provide independent analysis so you can see exactly where politicians stand.

This is a public health crisis.

Our water testing in Southland this weekend found that the Lumsden town water supply was at 6.14 mg/L of nitrate, above levels of nitrate contamination associated with an increased risk of preterm birth and bowel cancer.

Nitrate contamination is caused by the intensive dairy industry. And we need to act now to stop the pollution at the source. That means reducing the size of the dairy herd, and phasing out the use of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser. Sign the petition now - link in comments.
