The Aunties

The Aunties The Aunties believe that it is crucial to recognise, acknowledge, and nurture the power we all have within. This is the public page for The Aunties.

It is open for all to see. We are not the Christchurch Aunties. We are based in Auckland. The Aunties whānau are a grouping of indigenous women who are powerful and extraordinary in their survival. As an organisation, it is our job to ensure they have the practical resources they need so that they can focus on healing, and to remind them of how powerful they are, with every interaction, and at every turn.

Liv Parker is a very special human being.
She played so hard for us on Celebrity Treasure Island and she got so close!

Before I knew she was in the final, I asked her to come and see me. And this morning, she did. She got to meet one of the Aunties Whānau, which was very special, and we talked for four hours straight. Some seeds were sown, so keep your eyes peeled….

There will be more conversations in our future.

Here’s to good human beings.

Tonight the wonderful Liv Parker is in the finals of Celebrity Treasure Island. She’s been playing for us to win $100,000. And she’s been playing so hard. We very much appreciate her. So if you watch tonight, yell and hoot and holler for her. Because she’s the sweetest person and we sure could use that money!

To make a submission against the legislation (definitions of woman and man) amendment bill.

Here’s a template….

Submission on the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment
BillTo: The Social Services and Community CommitteeDate: [Insert Date]
Submitter: [Insert Name/Organisation]
1. IntroductionI/we strongly oppose the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill. This bill seeks to amend the Legislation Act 2019 to legally define "woman" and "man" strictly by biological s*x.I believe this legislation is divisive, ignores the lived realities of gender-diverse New Zealanders, and undermines existing human rights protections.

2. Reasons for OppositionDiscriminatory impact: This legislation seeks to exclude and erase the identities of transgender, non-binary, inters*x, and gender-diverse individuals. Human rights and dignity should not be subject to restrictive state definitions.Contradicts medical and legal realities: By forcing a strict biological binary, this bill will create confusion in administrative, legal, and healthcare settings. Trans individuals often have medical needs, screenings, and treatments that rely on gender categorisations rather than assigned s*x at birth; overriding this causes practical harm.Erosion of inclusion: Attempts to police gender do not enhance safety; rather, they foster fear, exclusion, and a higher risk of harassment and discrimination for vulnerable communities who already face significant barriers.Out of step with Aotearoa's values: New Zealand has long been a country that champions progressive human rights and inclusivity. This bill is a step backward and targets a community that contributes positively to our society's diversity.

3. ConclusionThe proposed definitions are harmful, discriminatory, and unworkable in everyday practice. I urge the Committee to recommend that this bill does not proceed.

Mōrena whānau.
Thank you all so much for your celebration of trans people following my posts yesterday.
Now write to your MPs, and tell them what’s what.

And the transphobes can keep mindlessly spitting their bile into the world, but on this platform, at least, it’ll vanish….mysteriously. Never to be seen again.

Kia Ora koutou.
Some clarity.

I don’t need to hear yr views.
Trans ppl don’t need to hear your views.

So yes, any comments being negative about trans people will be deleted.

Freedom of speech means you bear responsibility for your speech, and ideas that you vocalise and espouse.

When those views are actively harmful to other people, you lose your right to that freedom.

You’re welcome.

I have worked with many trans and nonbinary people in the last 13 years.
And The Aunties has supported so many with their needs. Binders, new birth certificates…the list goes on.

So it is with a lot of rage and hurting hearts that we see that NZ First is attempting to push through this anti trans bill currently in the House, with the promise of support from the NACT members of the House.

The very same government who have:

• cut pay equity
• cut violence prevention funding
• removed relationships and s*xuality education guidelines
• undermined women’s support services

And this bill is supposed to make women safe?

It’s just one more way that the cis patriarchy gets to police, and intervene, in our lives. All of our lives.

They couch it in terms of safety, when it does the very opposite.

Please email your MPs, make noise, and above all, actively celebrate and meaningfully support our trans siblings.

This is just more violence against women and non binary people.

It will not stand.

This post is being carefully monitored. Any negative comments will be deleted.

A truly remarkable thing.

A truly remarkable thing.

Today marks exactly three years since Te Whare Tiaki, Rongomātāne Men’s Centre opened its doors.

But the truth is, this whare was built on the strength of our wāhine. For decades, it was the voices of our mothers, wives, partners, sisters, and daughters calling for a dedicated space where their husbands, partners, fathers, and sons could do the work. They saw the need, they raised the call, and under the guidance of our kaiwhakahaere, we stood it up.

We are here because they fought for us to have a place to heal and do the work. We don’t just open doors; we hold the space.

To the wāhine who paved the way: We hear you. To the men walking the path: We see you.

Respect to everyone who has walked through them, worked within them, and supported the kaupapa since day one.

Three years down. Many more to come.

When I first got Iggy, 7 years ago, I expressly wanted a dog who would serve as sort of a therapy dog. He’s served that purpose over the years, and adores the whānau women.
Occasionally, rarely, one of them will come to stay with me, just for a night, for a wee break, and an intensive catch up. And so it was with A. She came for the night, and Iggy was delighted!
