Inspired by our documentary Driven to Find a Cure, Driven by Love celebrates the incredible people going the extra mile for someone they love and helping move us closer to a cure for Parkinson’s.

On Saturday 16 May, Olivia completed the Hawke’s Bay Marathon in honour of her grandad Ray, who lives with Parkinson’s disease.

Olivia shared how difficult it has been watching her grandad’s function decline - not only for him, but for all the people who love him. Wanting to do something meaningful to help, she set herself the challenge of running the marathon while fundraising for Parkinson’s research.

Despite becoming injured with 10km still to go, Olivia pushed through and crossed the finish line, motivated by the daily challenges her grandad faces living with Parkinson’s.

What started as a goal to raise $500 became $2,100 for Parkinson’s research.

An incredible effort inspired entirely by love - thank you Olivia. 🙏💜

Want to run for someone you love? Want to run for a cure?

Join the Cure Parkinson’s NZ fundraising team for the Auckland Marathon on Sunday 1 November 2026 and help us move closer to a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

We are so incredibly proud of Sharon Dodds following the successful completion of her extraordinary Pedal to Phoenix 2026 by ZWAP fundraising ride.

This morning’s interview on TVNZ+ Breakfast captured the determination, resilience, hard work, and sheer grit Sharon poured into every kilometre of this journey.

Riding from San Francisco to Phoenix is a huge challenge for anyone.

To do it while living with Parkinson’s disease makes it even more remarkable.

Sharon undertook this ride to raise vital funds and awareness for Cure Parkinson’s New Zealand and the urgent need for more research into this disease - and we could not be more grateful for her courage, commitment, and heart.

If you would like to congratulate Sharon on her incredible achievement, there is still time to support her via our fundraising page, where 100% of donations go towards much-needed Parkinson’s research. Over the past week, Sharon and the team have ridden from Santa Cruz to Monterey, then Monterey to Big Sur, tackling some serious hills, long days, and unforgettable coastline views along the way.

Today’s ride took the team through busy bike paths and iconic spots including Venice Beach, before arriving into Redondo Beach in Los Angeles.

As of today, Sharon has completed an incredible 798 kilometres. She’s definitely feeling it after a tough few days in the saddle, but tomorrow brings a very well-earned rest day for the team.

Sharon also had a small tumble off her bike along the way, but thankfully there was no damage to either Sharon or the bike — and true to form, she’s back up and just keeps on keeping on. 💪

A huge thank you to every cyclist, support crew member, friend, companion, and cheerleader helping make this dream a reality and creating real impact for Parkinson’s awareness and research.

DAY 1 DONE - AND WHAT A START...

Sharon Dodds has officially kicked off her fundraising ride from San Francisco to Phoenix for Cure Parkinson’s NZ, covering 80km on her first day.

She was nervous at the start (as anyone would be), but is now feeling confident and strong — and already experiencing the power of the Parkinson’s community along the way.

From a warm welcome in Santa Cruz to incredible support from a local Parkinson’s group — including lunch and massages — it’s clear this journey is about so much more than the ride itself.

Tomorrow, the team will be welcomed at a special reception in Marina with local supporters and community leaders.

We’re so proud to have Sharon representing Cure Parkinson’s NZ on this journey.

There’s still time to support Sharon — if you’d like to sponsor her ride or follow along on her journey with our live tracker, you can do so via the link below. 👇

Parkinson’s disease doesn’t send an invitation.

It doesn’t care that you eat kale, do yoga, or never smoked.

It can pick the fittest person in the room.

It can pick you.

1 in 37 people are at risk of being picked by this insidious disease.

Our Cure Collective researchers are working to make sure no one else is picked for that team again.

We have 3. Be the reason we get to 6.

Don't give Parkinson's a choice - donate today via the link below. 👇

You may not see Parkinson’s stealing someone’s sleep, their confidence, their handwriting, their independence – one tiny piece at a time.

You may not see the mental marathon it takes for them some days to just get out of bed. 1 in 37 people know this hidden battle.

We’re building a Cure Collective of 6 researchers to end it.

Parkinson’s doesn’t care if you’re a marathon runner, a CEO, a grandad, or 35 with two toddlers.

It doesn’t check your bank account, your fitness level, or your family history.

It just picks. And right now it’s picking 1 in 37 people but our Cure Collective is fighting back.

Help us stop the fastest growing neurological condition in the world.

We have 3 researchers. We need 3 more.

Imagine planning your life around “good hours” and “bad hours.”

Imagine apologising for dropping a cup you used to hold without thinking.

Imagine grieving the person you were while still being alive.

Imagine being ‘the one’ of 1 in 37 people given a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.

We’re funding the Cure Collective so that no-one has to imagine being that statistic.

Donate today and help our team find a cure to stop or slow the progression of this disease. Link below.

You may not see Parkinson’s stealing someone’s sleep, their confidence, their handwriting and their independence one tiny piece at a time, and you may not see the mental marathon it takes on some days for them to just get out of bed.

1 in 37 people may unfortunately get to know this hidden battle. Sadly over 13,000 Kiwis already do.

We’re building a Cure Collective of 6 researchers to end it. We have 3.
