📣 Today is Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) Awareness Day.

PPA is a form of dementia that affects language first – making it harder to speak, understand, read, or write.

In this recorded discussion, Winifred Henderson (Dementia New Zealand) and Christa Grbin (AphasiaNZ) talk through what PPA is and the kind of changes people might notice.

💬 “PPA is a language-led dementia, where language symptoms are often the first signs to appear.” Christa Gerbin

Those changes can be easy to miss at first. Words don’t come as easily. Conversations take more effort. It can be mistaken for everyday lapses.

If you or someone you know is noticing changes in communication, this is a helpful place to start.

If you’re supporting someone with dementia | mate wareware, our Dementia Advisors can provide practical guidance and support.

🚗 Research opportunity – sharing your experience 🚗

For many families supporting someone with dementia | mate wareware, conversations about driving can be difficult. Questions about safety, independence and timing can be challenging for everyone involved.

The University of Waikato PhD Fellow Kushalata Baral is conducting research exploring how families and whānau make decisions about when someone with cognitive impairment should stop driving.

If you are a partner, child, or family member who has been involved in supporting someone through this decision, you may be able to take part.

Participation involves an anonymous online survey and takes around 15–20 minutes.

Your experience could help researchers better understand the challenges families face and improve guidance and support for others in the future.

Tracking Success: NZCT Helps WanderSearch Keep Loved Ones Safe 🧭❤️

NZCT has awarded $5,000 to WanderSearch Auckland to refurbish 200 safety tracking devices for people with cognitive impairments, helping families stay connected and giving peace of mind if loved ones wander.

Joan from Newmarket shares, “It is marvellous what you do, I am grateful. My husband has gone missing three times to date, the last time for two hours but the Police managed to find him still safe and without distress.”

NZCT can fund this community good thanks to the fundraising partnerships we share with local hospitality venues via their responsible gaming lounges.”

Living with dementia can be a scary and overwhelming experience. To make matters worse, people living with dementia can be vulnerable to being targeted, manipulated, or taken advantage of by others.

Memory loss, confusion, and increased trust can place people at risk of scams, financial abuse, neglect, or exploitation. This can happen quietly and often goes unnoticed until serious harm has already occurred.

Awareness, support, and early action matter. Looking out for older people, staying informed, and speaking up can help protect dignity, safety, and wellbeing.
