🀱 - Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: strengthen what works

Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to give children the healthiest possible start in life. It supports growth and development, strengthens immunity, and contributes to better nutrition outcomes for both mothers and children.

World Food Programme Nepal works alongside the Government of Nepal and partners to support pregnant and breastfeeding women, caregivers, and communities through our Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN) programme. Through nutrition counselling, growth monitoring, cooking demonstrations, community outreach, and the promotion of optimal maternal, infant, and young child feeding practices, we are helping families make informed nutrition choices during the critical first 000 days.

By investing in proven nutrition interventions and supporting mothers when it matters most, we can help children thrive, build healthier communities, and create a more resilient future for all.

WFP Nepal recently met with International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Nepal and the Nepal Red Cross Society to explore opportunities for stronger collaboration in humanitarian preparedness and emergency response.

The discussion focused on enhancing preparedness, strengthening coordination, and ensuring timely, effective support for communities affected by disasters and other crises.

By combining our expertise, resources, and networks, we can build more resilient communities and better support to those most at-risk before, during and after emergencies.

World Food Programme Nepal's Country Director, Riaz Lodhi, met with Dr. Dharam Raj Upreti, Chief Executive Officer of the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Authority (NDRRMA), to reaffirm our shared commitment to strengthening Nepal's disaster preparedness and response systems.

Over the years, WFP and NDRRMA have worked closely to strengthen Nepal’s disaster readiness through preparedness planning, early warning systems, anticipatory action, and support for communities facing disasters and climate shocks.

Looking ahead, WFP will continue supporting the Government of Nepal to advance innovative and digital disaster management solutions, expand anticipatory action, and strengthen systems for faster and more effective responses to emergencies.

Together, we are building a safer, more resilient, and disaster-ready Nepal, where communities are better prepared to anticipate, withstand, and recover from future shocks.

🍚 Happy Kheer Khane Din! 🍚

Today, families across Nepal come together to celebrate Kheer Khane Din, a tradition rooted in gratitude, nourishment, and hopes for a prosperous harvest. It is also an occasion to recognize how nutritious school meals, including Kheer, in school menu contribute to children's learning, growth, and overall well-being.

For children like nine-year-old Reshma, who walks along the rocky hillsides of Jajarkot to attend school and dreams of becoming a health worker, a daily hot and nutritious meal is about much more than food. Through the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, she is better able to learn, grow stronger, and pursue her aspirations with confidence.

Led by local governments in partnership with WFP Nepal, the programme connects schools with local farmers who supply fresh vegetables, grains, and other nutritious foods. In doing so, it not only nourishes children but also strengthens local food systems, supports livelihoods, and creates opportunities for farming communities.

Just as kheer symbolizes nourishment and hope, every school meal represents an investment in a child's future. Together, we are helping children like Reshma learn, thrive, and build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
