DEPO facilitates three days of disaster risk reduction (DRR) education training from June 27 to 29 in Tansen, Palpa.

Throughout the program, students strengthened their disaster preparedness knowledge through a range of engaging, hands-on learning activities, including disaster drills, paper craft games, a landslide-themed Snakes and Ladders game, earthquake awareness picture stories, an emergency kit quiz game, and shuffle card games. These interactive tools helped transform complex disaster concepts into practical, memorable learning experiences.

The program was organized by Tansen Municipality under the School-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Resource Center project. DEPO Nepal is one of the technical partners for this project, helping to capacitate schools and students.

DEPO proudly led the disaster preparedness component of the Training of Trainers on Inclusive Community-Based Flood Early Warning Systems (CBFEWS) in Rautahat under the HI-GRID Project implemented by ICIMOD and funded by the Australian Government (DFAT).

The training brought together representatives from 13 municipalities, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), youth representatives, and community members from the Lal Bakaiya River Basin. Through interactive simulations, serious games, practical exercises, and participatory learning methods, participants strengthened their capacity to prepare for and respond to flood emergencies using locally available resources and community-driven approaches.

During the training, DEPO Nepal facilitated a session on disaster risk reduction using various games and participatory tools. CBM Nepal facilitated sessions on Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), while the Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal provided hands-on search and rescue training, ensuring participants gained practical skills for emergency response.

This activity is a part of a collaboration between DEPO, ICIMOD, and Mandwi to make the local community resilient.

On June 19, DEPO conducted a one-day earthquake preparedness training for staff members of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at the JICA Office in Lazimpat.

The training introduced practical, low-cost disaster education tools—including board games, card games, interactive exercises, and disaster drills—to demonstrate how participatory learning can make disaster preparedness more engaging and effective. Through hands-on activities, participants strengthened their understanding of disaster risks and practical preparedness measures. This training is part of the Hello Kitty Hand Wash Program by JICA, where DEPO Nepal is jointly facilitating DRR education activities in schools with JICA.

On 11–12 June, DEPO Nepal facilitated an analog game co-design workshop at Human Development and Community Services (HDCS), bringing together 25 participants from diverse fields.

Working in four teams, participants co-created innovative game prototypes focused on flood disaster preparedness and the concept of climate change. The workshop transformed complex climate and disaster concepts into interactive learning tools that are suitable for both community engagement and school education.

The game prototypes will now be refined, field-tested with communities and schools, and further developed for wider implementation. This activity is a part of the Emergency Response Project of HDCS, in which DEPO is a technical partner for making disaster educational tools.

We are pleased to share that the four-day Training of Trainers for teachers on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) education has been concluded in Tansen Municipality, Palpa.

Teachers from 31 schools participated in this program, where they were equipped with practical skills to localize DRR education and effectively use interactive DRR educational game materials.

On the fourth day of the training, an event was held at Padma Public Model School, where trained teachers demonstrated the DRR activities and games to students. More than 50 students actively participated in the session. A feedback session with the students highlighted their strong interest, engagement, and positive learning experiences.

The event was attended by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chief Administrative Officer, and Ward Chairpersons of Tansen Municipality, reflecting strong local commitment toward strengthening disaster resilience in schools.

In the next phase, trained teachers will replicate these activities in their respective schools, followed by a Training of Trainers (ToT) for student leaders to further expand the impact.

This initiative is part of our ongoing collaboration with Tansen Municipality to establish School-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Resource Center (SBDRRC). The project is being implemented in collaboration with CityNet Plus Arts Center for Creative Partnership, Kobe, Japan and DEPO Nepal.

We look forward to the continued impact of this initiative in building safer and more resilient school communities.

🕵️We need to learn from the root causes of past disasters more urgently than ever!

As global warming edges past 1.5°C, the world is entering a new era of escalating climate hazards.

🌪️ Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and severity. But these events only become disasters when exposure and vulnerability intersect – driven by hunger, poverty, inequality, unplanned urbanisation and unsustainable development. Combined with natural and anthropogenic hazards, these are the root causes of disasters; and this is why we say there are no natural disasters.

📉 Disaster risks don’t exist in isolation. In this interconnected world, risks combine, cascade and compound– as we've seen with El Niño, political instability and economic shocks to creating compounding impacts and cascading crises.

As a result the world is facing more humanitarian needs, more development setbacks, and more lives and livelihoods on the edge.

🧠 But disasters are rarely without precedent. Most disasters are preceded by smaller, similar events. By studying these, we can identify root causes, understand emerging patterns, and use these learnings to strengthen resilience before the next ‘big one’ strikes.

💡 We need to take a forensic approach and learn from past disasters. They provide data points – and opportunities – that can help shape a safer, fairer, and more stable future.

Building a Culture of Safety: DEPO Empowers Students at Creative Academy

At DEPO, we believe that empowering the next generation with life-saving skills is the most effective way to build a resilient community.

We recently conducted a successful Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Preparedness Workshop at Creative Academy, Kirtipur. Our team worked with two dedicated groups—Grades 4 & 5 and Grades 6 through 8—providing them with the tools and knowledge to act decisively during emergencies.

Practical Skills for Real-World Situations In focused, one-hour intensive sessions, students engaged in hands-on training.

We are incredibly proud of the students' enthusiasm and their commitment to safety. A big thank you to the Creative Academy administration for prioritizing these essential life skills.

Earthquake Safety Day

Today, we remember the devastating mega earthquake of 1990 BS and honor the lives remembered by committing ourselves to a safer future.
