As we go into 2026, the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust would like to start with this message: “To save history, you’ve got to make history” - Gautam SJB Rana, Former Programme Director of KVPT. As 2025 was ending the KVPT held its annual Friends & Family gathering at Babar Mahal Revisited’s central courtyard; a particularly significant venue, as this neo-classical complex was restored by our very own founding director, Erich Theophile. History was made, and history was saved. Without support from individuals such as yourselves, across the breadth of Nepali identities in our rich ethnic landscape, our extraordinary cultural history, which belongs to all of us, could not be saved. We wish you all a wonderful New Year, 2026. We hope it will bring you great joy, and an even finer appreciation of history. We ask you to help us in our mission to restore and conserve the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Kathmandu Valley. kathmanduvalley

These humble tools of the skilled woodwork artisans are often crafted by the artisans themselves to suit the delicate but rigorous work required. The KVPT woodworking workshop is an example of best practice conservation and restoration practices. Click on the link in our bio to contribute. 🙏🏼🍀

It has been 10 years since our lives were thoroughly shaken up. Our homes were destroyed along with precious schools; lives were lost and so many, centuries old, temples and monuments came crashing down, or were terribly destabilised. KVPT has helped to build back better. Let us take a moment to grieve our past losses and imagine a stronger more resilient future together. Photo: Scott Newman

Coming up to the 10 year mark of the catastrophic 2015 Nepal earthquake, the Trust looks back on its remarkable achievements. This image shows the remarkable efforts of salvage and catalogue made by KVPT after the earthquake as it used the communitiy and its decades of experience to rescue priceless remains from the rubble, clean them, restore them and store them in the Patan Durbar Square Mul Chowk until they could be replaced in situ in their righful edifices of Char Narayan Temple, Hari Shankara, and many more.
