⚠️ HEAVY RAINFALL ALERT | STAY PREPARED, STAY SAFE

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), there is a high likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of Nepal during Shrawan 2 and 3 (18–19 July 2026).

In response, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has activated high-level coordination and preparedness measures through meetings with Chief District Officers, District Disaster Management Committees, and the Monsoon Response Command Post.

DPNet Nepal urges all member organizations, partners, local governments, and communities to remain on HIGH ALERT and strengthen preparedness efforts.

✅ Avoid unnecessary travel in areas under heavy rainfall advisories and follow the instructions of local authorities.

DPNet Nepal marked its 30th Anniversary with the theme “𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥.”

The event brought together government representatives, development partners, civil society organizations, experts, practitioners, media, and community representatives to reflect on Nepal’s disaster risk reduction journey and the way forward.

Speakers highlighted the importance of moving from a reactive approach to a stronger culture of preparedness, risk-informed planning, community-based action, climate resilience, and whole-of-society collaboration. The discussions also emphasized the growing risks posed by climate change, urbanization, lightning, heatwaves, monsoon variability, and emerging hazards.

Prof. Dr. Sanjay Acharya, Member of the National Planning Commission, stressed the need to strengthen awareness from the individual and family level and connect it with community and institutional systems. Dr. S.P. Kalaune, Chairperson of AIN, acknowledged DPNet’s important contribution in promoting preparedness and coordination over the last three decades. DPNet Nepal Chairperson Dr. Basanta Raj Adhikari reaffirmed the network’s commitment to advancing science, technology, innovation, and community-centered disaster risk reduction.

The program also featured technical presentations on the monsoon outlook, heatwave risk, lightning safety, and urban resilience, followed by a panel discussion on strengthening disaster preparedness and climate resilience through a whole-of-society approach.

As part of the celebration, participants endorsed the 𝐃𝐏𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝟑𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, reaffirming collective commitment to building a safer, more resilient, and disaster-prepared Nepal.

As DPNet Nepal enters its next decade, we remain committed to strengthening partnerships, knowledge sharing, innovation, and community-led resilience across Nepal.

🔹 Local government capacity exists, but it has not been fully tested during major disasters.⁣

🔹 Nepal has piloted frontier technologies such as 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐀𝐈, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐑 in disaster response, but institutionalization and scaling remain limited.⁣
🔹 Many lessons are experienced after disasters, but they are rarely documented, transferred, and implemented in future events.⁣

The discussion highlighted the need for stronger collaboration, better documentation of lessons, interoperable systems, and practical pathways to scale technologies that truly respond to the needs of disaster-affected communities.⁣

On April 30, DPNet, in collaboration with NAXA and partners, successfully concluded a workshop on “AI-enabled Disaster Damage Assessment in Nepal.”

The half-day workshop brought together more than 30 participants from diverse sectors, including practitioners, researchers, and organizations working with drone technology in disaster response. The workshop was structured into three main sessions, where:

Session 1 focused on the use of drones in disaster risk management (DRM) and damage assessment, with discussions centered on current practices, key challenges, and the potential of AI to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Session 2 included the group discussion session to interact with the functionalities of AI based damage assessment including ethical considerations from participants and discussed key areas where future AI features should be prioritized.

Session 3 featured a panel discussion, fostering dialogue among experts on collaboration, innovation, and the future of AI-driven disaster response in Nepal.

Moving forward, the insights and learnings from this workshop will be incorporated into ongoing AI tool development and will soon begin work on the “Drones and AI for Disaster Assessment Landscape Report for Nepal”.

A sincere thank you to all contributors and the organizing team for making this event a success. This marks an important step toward building stronger partnerships and advancing data-driven disaster response in Nepal.
