How can we engage communities in cultural heritage in ways that are meaningful, ethical and shaped by the communities themselves?

"Engaging Communities in Cultural Heritage" is a 4-day online training programme exploring how social and artistic research, community-led initiatives and collaborative practices can create more meaningful approaches to working with communities.

Participants will explore:

- Community engagement as a long-term process and a key heritage management strategy
- Heritage values and their role in community initiatives
- How to understand different communities, their needs, capacities and characteristics
- Ethnographic approaches to collaborative, research-based engagement
- Oral history methods for documenting tangible and intangible heritage
- The difference between communities and audiences
- How to develop a community engagement project workflow
- How to design engagement approaches suited to specific communities and contexts

The programme combines expert guidance, discussion and practical exercises, giving participants the opportunity to reflect on their own work, explore communities through research-based approaches and develop ideas for collaborative projects and multimedia content.

🖊 As part of Refugee Week Malta 2026, we came together for Botanical Fabulations: Sensory-scapes, memory, and the courage to search for home, a workshop exploring migration and belonging through our relationships with the natural world.

We spoke about traditions on the use of the jasmine flower shared between Malta, Tunisia, and India, and plants such as tomatoes, chillies, and sunflowers that travelled across oceans before becoming part of new cultures and identities. These stories opened conversations about displacement, movement, and what it means to make a place feel like home.

One recurring theme was that belonging is not something fixed. Like plants, people move, adapt, and grow through relationships, care, and connection. We reflected on how cultures have always been shaped by exchange, and how diversity enriches the communities we share.

Thank you to Refugee Week Malta and the Franciscan Capuchin Friary in Floriana who hosted us, and everyone who joined us and helped cultivate a garden of stories, memories, and hope. 💚

🖊 We spent a lovely morning at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, where the Migrants Commission, in collaboration with Heritage Malta, organized the Found in Translation workshop.

The workshop brought together children and adults to explore storytelling, language and cultural heritage. We began with a short guided tour of the museum, reflecting on the stories archaeology can tell us about how people used to live, work, spend their free time and connect with one another.

Afterwards, we shared stories from different cultures, discussed the moral lessons found in them, and reflected on the values many folktales have in common - kindness, generosity, courage, humility and justice.
