We’re pleased to see our call for a more pluralist Constitution receiving wider attention.

Humanists Malta believes Malta’s Catholic heritage can and should be recognised, while the State itself remains neutral towards all religions and beliefs.

For us, this is about building a constitutional framework that reflects Malta as it is today: a society made up of people of different faiths, beliefs and none, all of whom should stand equally before the State.

🇵🇸 Today, civil society made its message clear.

As Malta’s Parliament prepared for its opening session, Humanists Malta joined 21 other NGOs in endorsing the letter **Stop Complicity With Israel** — a call for Malta’s political leadership to act with urgency and humanity.

Following Malta’s recognition of the State of Palestine, the next step must be consistency: recognition should not remain symbolic while trade, transfers, or military items risk contributing to the denial of Palestinian rights in the form of ethnic cleansing, illegal settlement activity, genocide, apartheid and dispossession.

The letter calls for an immediate embargo on military items to Israel, and for a comprehensive reduction in trade and transfers that may contribute to complicity in violations of Palestinian rights.

For Humanists Malta, this is about a basic principle: human dignity has no borders. International law must mean something. Human rights must apply to everyone.

We are proud to stand with Maltese civil society in calling for justice in Palestine, accountability, and an end to complicity. 🕊️⚖️

In 5 days, we gather in front of the Maltese Parliament. Malta's government must stop aiding these crimes.

🇵🇸 Humanists Malta stands for justice in Palestine.

Humanists Malta is proud to endorse the civil society letter **Stop Complicity With Israel**, together with 21 other NGOs.

📍 From 3:30pm on Monday 5 October, before the opening session of Malta’s Parliament, each parliamentarian will be handed a letter calling for concrete action from Malta’s political leadership.

The letter calls for an immediate embargo on military items to Israel, as well as a comprehensive reduction in trade and transfers that may contribute to complicity in Israel’s violations of Palestinian human rights, genocide, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and illegal occupations.

For Humanists Malta, this is a matter of human dignity, international law, and moral responsibility. Human rights must apply universally, and Malta should not remain passive where there is a risk of complicity in grave injustice.

We stand with Maltese civil society in calling for justice in Palestine and for political leaders to act with urgency, consistency, and humanity. 🕊️⚖️

There has been a lot of discussion recently about whether Malta needs to become a more secular state, and whether our Constitution should be updated to better reflect the Malta of today.

Humanists Malta has been advocating for these changes for several years, and we want to share our position.

A secular state is not a state against religion. It is a state that takes no side.

It protects everyone’s right to believe, to change their beliefs, or to have no religious belief at all, while ensuring that everyone is treated equally by the state.

The Catholic Church, like any other religious or civil society organisation, has every right to speak, teach and contribute to public life. But in a modern, pluralistic democracy, no single religion should hold a privileged place in the country’s supreme law.

Malta today is home to people of many different beliefs, as well as many people with no religion. A secular Constitution would be a Constitution that belongs equally to all of us.

For Humanists Malta, this is an important part of continuing to build a more tolerant, peaceful and inclusive society in which everyone can feel that they belong.

A proud moment for Humanists Malta 💚

We are delighted to celebrate our **Humanists Malta Celebrants**, whose Humanist wedding services have now been formally accredited by the **European Humanist Services Network (EHSN)**.

This recognition reflects the care, professionalism and humanist values they bring to creating ceremonies that are personal, inclusive and centred on the people whose stories and commitments they celebrate.

Congratulations to everyone who has helped develop Humanist celebrancy in Malta, and to our celebrants who continue to offer meaningful alternatives for people who want to mark life’s most important moments in a way that truly reflects who they are. ❤️

Humanists Malta is in Berlin this week for the *European Humanist Services Network (EHSN) Working Seminar*, taking place on 16 and 17 September at the Humanistische Hochschule Berlin. https://humanistservices.eu/

Our Chairperson is representing Humanists Malta alongside humanist organisations from across Europe, sharing experiences, learning from one another and exploring how we can strengthen the services and impact of our organisations.

For Humanists Malta, a key focus during this seminar is *fundraising and organisational sustainability*. The programme includes dedicated discussions on joint fundraising, EU funding opportunities, peer-to-peer support and potential projects for continued cooperation across the European humanist network.

As a growing, volunteer-led organisation, developing this area will help us build greater capacity, support new initiatives and make our work more sustainable over the long term.

The seminar also brings together participants working on humanist ceremonies, youth engagement and existential care, alongside workshops on storytelling and wider discussions about the role of humanism in society.

We look forward to sharing more of what we learn, and bringing new ideas and opportunities for collaboration back to Malta.

🗳️ Democracy Day

In a time of growing uncertainty, and with authoritarian tendencies re-emerging in different parts of the world, the question of engagement becomes ever more pressing.

Democracy is sustained not only by institutions, but by people who choose to take part in shaping the world around them.

Bertolt Brecht reminded us that indifference is never neutral — that when we turn away, the consequences do not disappear, they accumulate. The conditions we live under are shaped by what we challenge, and what we allow to pass unexamined.

At its core, this reflects a humanist insight: that the world we inhabit is shaped by human action, responsibility, and shared effort.

There is no other world to defer to. What exists is this one — and its future is in our hands. 🌍

Are our most fundamental choices truly ours, or are they simply permitted until someone in power decides otherwise?

From bodily autonomy and freedom of conscience to equality and civil rights, too much can depend on discretion, goodwill or who happens to hold power.

A healthy democracy should not require people to ask for favours where they should be able to rely on rights.

It is time to move Malta from a culture of permission and discretion towards a society where human rights are clear, protected and available to everyone.

A healthy democracy is not measured by how generously power is exercised. It is measured by how little people need to depend on power's goodwill in the first place.

🌿 Comino is not simply a beautiful place. It is part of our shared natural heritage, and decisions affecting it deserve the highest level of scrutiny.

The decision by the Environment and Resources Authority to approve extensive tree interventions and preparatory works connected with the proposed Comino development has understandably raised serious environmental and governance concerns, particularly while the development itself remains subject to legal challenge.

We welcome the work of Moviment Graffitti and other environmental organisations seeking to scrutinise these decisions and protect Comino through lawful civic action. Moviment Graffitti has now launched an appeal against the ERA permit and a wider campaign to defend the island.

For humanists, care for the natural world is inseparable from care for human wellbeing. Healthy ecosystems, biodiversity and access to our shared natural heritage matter, but so do transparent institutions, evidence-based decision-making and public authorities acting in the public interest.

Development decisions can have consequences lasting generations. They should therefore be approached with caution, openness and genuine respect for the environmental value of places such as Comino.

Protecting our natural heritage is a matter of responsibility to one another, to future generations and to the living world we share. 🌍
