Humanists Malta

Humanists Malta For a more equitable and humane society based on science, reason, and compassion. Humanism is not a religion.

Humanists Malta, founded 2010 as The Malta Humanist Association, champions the Humanist worldview in Malta. While it respects, and engages with, those who hold religious beliefs, it encompasses no belief in any deity or the supernatural, and has no set dogma to which its followers are required to adhere. Rather, it encourages us to ask questions with curiosity, realism, humility and empathy for al

l fellow beings, and works towards the building of more equitable and humane society based on freedom of thought, secular ethics, human rights, and emotional intelligence – grounded in science, reason and compassion. Alongside its advocacy of Humanist values, it offers ceremonies to mark life events (weddings, baby-namings, funerals and memorials) for those without religious beliefs. Your wishes. Your values. Your voice.

Following the introduction of Malta’s new legislation on Advance Directives, commonly known as Living Wills, we have updated our website with a dedicated explainer to help people better understand what Living Wills are — and why they matter.

Living Wills give people the opportunity to record their legally binding healthcare wishes in advance, helping ensure that their choices, values, and preferences are known and respected if a time comes when they can no longer communicate them.

Our updated guide answers key questions, including:

✓ What is a Living Will?
✓ What decisions can it cover?
✓ What does it not cover?
✓ Who can make one?
✓ How can you prepare your own?

At Humanists Malta, we believe that dignity, compassion, and personal autonomy should remain at the heart of decisions about our own lives and healthcare.

Living Wills in Malta are covered by the Advance Medical Directives Act since April 2026. Humanists Malta provides input and guidance.

🏳️‍🌈 Pride is not just a celebration of diversity and equality. It is also a reminder of the long struggle for human rights, and of the work that still remains.

This year, a familiar question has resurfaced: do we still need Pride?

The better question is: have we finished the work?

Malta has made significant progress on LGBTQI+ rights, and that progress deserves recognition. But equality is not something that is achieved once and for all. It requires constant attention, protection, and effort.

Discrimination, prejudice, barriers to inclusion, and unequal treatment have not disappeared. Many people still face challenges in accessing support, recognition, safety, and the freedom to live openly as themselves.

Pride is not about declaring victory, nor about telling people who they should be. It is about recognising progress while continuing to push for a society where everyone, whoever they love or however they identify, can live openly, safely, and with dignity.

Human rights are not a destination. They are an ongoing commitment.

This Pride Month, we celebrate how far we have come, and reaffirm our commitment to a Malta where everyone can live with dignity, freedom, and equal respect.

🌈 Happy Pride Month from Humanists Malta.

🤖 AI, ethics, and human dignity.

We agree with much of Pope Leo XIV's message in Magnifica Humanitas on the dangers and opportunities of AI, even if we start from different philosophical foundations.

As our original comments were not published, we've shared a summary on our website.

🤖✨ A thoughtful conversation on AI, humanity, and the future we are building.

We’re pleased to share this podcast from late last week featuring Prof. Christian Colombo from Humanists Malta, reflecting on artificial intelligence and the questions it raises for our society.

AI is transforming how we live, learn, work, and make decisions. As its influence grows, so do the questions it raises about ethics, responsibility, creativity, power, and the values that should guide the future we are creating.

From a humanist perspective, the conversation begins with people: how technology can serve human wellbeing, protect dignity, and support a fairer, more thoughtful society.

Curiosity, critical thinking, and open dialogue are more important than ever. 🌍🧠

Wonderful news for Humanists Malta!

We are delighted to share that the Humanists Malta Humanist Wedding Service has been officially accredited by the European Humanist Professionals Network (EHSN).

Following the EHSN Accreditation Board meeting in Oslo on Saturday 9 May, our wedding service has been formally recognised as meeting the official EHSN humanist wedding standard.

This is a beautiful milestone for Humanists Malta — and an international recognition of the care, quality, and meaning behind our ceremonies. Humanist weddings are about celebrating love, commitment, and personal meaning in a way that reflects the values and story of each couple. ❤️

We are also pleased that our service can now be presented as a Humanist wedding service accredited by EHSN, with the official accreditation diploma to be presented at the EHSN seminar in Berlin this September.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone whose dedication, care, and hard work made this achievement possible. 🤝

Here’s to many more meaningful humanist ceremonies in Malta. 🌿

🎉 Humanists Malta turns 15

This April marks 15 years since our founding in 2010 (and our registration as an NGO in 2011).

Over the years, we’ve worked to promote reason, empathy, and human dignity in Malta — from secular education to end-of-life choices — made possible by your continued support.

This past year, we’ve continued advocating for compassionate, informed end-of-life decision-making, including support for Assisted Voluntary Euthanasia (AVE) and progress towards legally-binding Living Wills. We’re also proud to contribute to Humanists International’s Freedom of Thought Report.

As we look ahead, our commitment remains: to support a Malta where people are free to think critically and make informed choices about their own lives.

If you believe in this vision, you can support our work here: humanistsmalta.org/donate

Thank you for being part of this journey. 🤝

Humanism is about putting people first. ❤️

Reason. Compassion. Equality. Human rights.

If these values resonate with you, you’re probably already closer to humanism than you think. 🌍✨

We are Proud to stand with the global humanist movement in advocating for a fairer, more compassionate society for all.

🌌 Philosophy Summer Festival 2026

An evening of big questions, thoughtful dialogue, and deep reflection on life, love, and death.

We’re pleased to see Prof. Christian Colombo, representing Humanists Malta, contributing to this year’s programme — bringing a humanist perspective to one of philosophy’s most enduring questions: What legacy matters?

From Aristotle to artificial intelligence, from love and meaning to mortality and what lies beyond — this festival brings together a diverse range of voices exploring what it means to be human.

Multiculturalism cannot work when it is broken by design and when one community is told, repeatedly and through both word and policy, that its presence is conditional, its worship fallacious, and its representation in public life is an imposition.

A thoughtful and timely piece by Humanists Malta committee members Christian Colombo and Joanna Onions on belonging, equality, and the kind of society we are choosing to build in Malta.

At a time when fear and exclusion are increasingly normalised in public discourse, this article reminds us that dignity, fairness, and inclusion are not weaknesses. They are the foundations of a healthy democracy.
