Happy Father’s Day from the Société Jersiaise ✨

To mark the day, we are sharing this photograph of François Foot standing outside a shop building with two young boys, taken by his son, the prominent Jersey photographer Francis Foot.

Carefully composed and softly lit, the image presents a warm and considered portrait of its subject, and through this representation hints at the warmth of the relationship between father and son, who were both involved in the Foot family business, owning and managing Jersey’s iconic HMV franchise 🎶

Jersey Meets Corseul: A Journey into Iron Age Connections 🔎

Last Saturday, our Field Archaeologist travelled to Corseul (Côtes-d’Armor, Brittany) with Members of the Société Jersiaise Archaeology and Numismatics sections to give a lecture as part of the European Archaeology Days.

The talk explored the presence of the Coriosolites in Jersey during the centuries preceding the Roman conquest. Visitors to Corseul, the former Gallo-Roman capital of the Coriosolites, had the opportunity to discover the results of ongoing research led by the Société Jersiaise Field Archaeology Department – much of which remains unpublished 🔎

Following the lecture delivered as part of the European Archaeology Days, our members were given a preview of the new exhibition at ArchéoMusée Coriosolis.

A big thank you to Matthieu Bourel and Aurélie Gautier for organising this special visit for us 🙏

As an added bonus, we were able to travel back in time and discover the Temple of Mars through an immersive virtual reality experience 🏛️🕶️

🌍 Geology Section Meeting – The Rozel Conglomerate: A Jersey Geotreasure

Last week, Dr David Went gave a fascinating and insightful talk on the Rozel Conglomerate Formation.

His presentation shed new light on the deposition and structure of this remarkable geological feature, and many of us came away with a deeper understanding of Jersey’s ancient landscape. The talk sparked a lively discussion, with thoughtful questions and detailed answers that made the session especially rewarding.

It was a wonderful reminder of how inspiring it is to learn together as a community.

🪨 Whether you’re a seasoned geologist or simply curious about the Island beneath your feet, our Geology Section is open to all.
