Starting a career in international development or humanitarian relief can be challenging, but the JOA Programme Associate internship scheme offers a clear pathway into the sector.

Delivered in partnership with leading humanitarian and international development organisations, the 18-month programme equips Islanders with the skills, professional experience and overseas exposure to help launch careers that tackle global challenges.

🌱New for 2027: Volunteer with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Madagascar.🌱

Join a small team of volunteers supporting conservation activities at Lake Alaotra, home to wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, including the Critically Endangered Alaotran gentle lemur. Working alongside local communities, volunteers will help restore habitats, and see first-hand how conservation and community development go hand in hand.

Jersey and Zambia have renewed their commitment to working together to strengthen dairy development.

At the Jersey Forum 2026 in Zambia, Jersey's Minister for International Development and Chair of Jersey Overseas Aid, Deputy Carolyn Labey, met with Dr Max Choombe, Permanent Secretary in Zambia's Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, to renew the Memorandum of Understanding between Jersey and Zambia for a further five years.

First signed in 2022, the agreement supports cooperation through knowledge exchange, skills development and sustainable dairy sector growth.

The Forum, organised by the Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society, brought together 200 delegates from 14 countries, highlighting the power of long-term partnerships in creating opportunities for farmers and strengthening livelihoods for rural communities.

Applications are now open for JOA's 2027 Volunteering Programme

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night to learn more about Jersey Overseas Aid's international volunteering opportunities.

Guests heard inspiring stories from past volunteers and learnt about the three projects planned for 2027, which will see Islanders working alongside communities in Madagascar, Kenya and Nepal.

Whether its supporting nature dependent communities in Madagascar with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, improving access to clean water in Kenya with Sand Dams Worldwide, or helping build safe, climate resilient housing in Nepal with Habitat for Humanity Great Britain, these projects offer a unique opportunity to contribute skills, learn from local communities and be part of meaningful change.

As part of Jersey Overseas Aid's commitment to providing opportunities for Islanders, the Programme Associate Scheme offers a rare and unique entry point into the international development and humanitarian relief sector.

Since its launch in 2018, the scheme has supported more than 14 Programme Associates. Collectively, alumni have since gone on to contribute over 30 years of experience across the development and humanitarian sector.

Amber Mezbourian is currently serving as a United Nations Junior Professional Officer (JPO) with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh through Jersey Overseas Aid's JPO scheme. This gives young Jersey professionals the opportunity to gain frontline experience within the UN system.

In our latest blog, Amber reflects on completing the International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance (IDHA) in Pretoria, South Africa, organised by Fordham University. Bringing together humanitarian practitioners from eight countries, the programme explored humanitarian law and policy, leadership, ethics, international standards, and some of the complex challenges facing the sector today.

Amber shares how the course helped her step back from day-to-day operations, reflect on her experience with UNHCR, and deepen her understanding of the wider humanitarian system as she enters the final stages of her two-year placement.
