LOOKING FOR HOMES (separately)

Teddy and Monaco are both under our care and currently in foster in Jersey.

Both are 5 years old and are very sweet, smaller dudes who would love to find their forever homes.

They would benefit from steps / ramps to get on and off sofas due to their size and breeds and limited stairs ie not going up and down them all day.

They are used to sleeping in the human bedroom so we would be looking for this again - with time, they may be able to sleep in another room but a home should be prepared that this may not be the case.

Both travel well in cars / vans.

Due to their individual needs, flats are unlikely to suit them but as with all our dogs and homes, finding the right home is our primary goal so please do message if you think your set up could be right.

TEDDY (cross breed)

Separation anxiety - Yes
He will cry when left. Therefore he needs to be in a home who doesn’t need to leave him often and can work on this. His last home worked for a year to improve this so please be aware this will take time.

Other dogs - No
Teddy cannot currently live with other dogs (unless able to be kept on other side of a stair gate). He can mix with dogs outside on a lead but will bark when he sees a dog. He won’t be able to go off lead for now and would benefit from some social dog walks or group training classes to allow him to socialise with dogs in a more controlled setting.

Humans - Yes
Teddy is happy to be handled and be given attention. He is slightly nervous so having lots of positive interactions would be good for him. He could live with children who are calm and quiet - probably 10+ but we are happy to speak to other set ups if they match his needs.

MONACO (chihuahua)

Separation anxiety - No
Monaco can be left for 3-4 hours once settled.

Other dogs - Yes
Monaco is currently in foster with a number of other dogs of different sizes and could live with other dog(s) following intros. Other dogs in the home would need to be neutered.

Humans - With time
Monaco is nervous of new humans (more so with men) and will need limited handling for the first 24-48 hours. He will need a home who can advocate for him when out as he is very cute looking and people naturally try to touch him. He is very good at showing he is uncomfortable but has gone to nip if he is pushed. He is happy to be carried by his human(s). He would benefit from ongoing support to understand humans aren’t all scary.

Bonnie is looking for her forever home 🏡 🐾

Name: Bonnie
Breed: Greyhound
Age: 3.5yrs
Live with other dogs: Yes, could live with another dog pending successful introductions / meet ups.
Live with cats & small furries: No
Live with children: 6+ who are dog savvy. No toddlers / young kids.

Bonnie is a beautiful black greyhound with a wonderful personality. She’s confident, affectionate, playful and a little bit cheeky! She loves playing with her toys and is quite active for a greyhound, but equally enjoys a good sleep and all her home comforts including cuddling up on the sofa.

She is great with other dogs, walks really well on the lead and is very gentle. She has been in the company of children and happily interacts with them. She’s a good eater, toilets well when out on her walks and travels brilliantly in the car, where she’s very calm and relaxed.

Bonnie really enjoys being around people and being part of whatever is going on. She will make a lovely companion 🐾🖤

Bonnie is used to having company, so we would be looking for a home where someone is around for much of the day and where time can be built up gradually being left.
She would need a safe and secure enclosed garden with a minimum height of 5ft.

LOOKING FOR A HOME

Trixie hasn’t had the right home come forward yet.

Here’s a quick summary:
- walks - 2-3 miles most days (as with many older dog, she can miss the odd day and chill in the garden instead)
- socialable (loves meeting new people and dogs)
- other dogs - yes
- children - yes who have experience
- cats - not sure
- ideally a house with outside space
- clean in the house
- sleeps in own bed in human bedroom
- travels well in the car
- loves to help in the garden - if you dig, she will get right on in there!!
- can be left 3-4 hours (does need a couple of weeks to settle and another dog; as an only dog, she may take longer)

Trixie is looking for an active and sociable home who can also provide her periods of calm and quiet.

She may be older but she can still walk a good 60 minutes and is fast when she wants to be! She may also enjoy learning new skills at dog classes or at home.

She probably needs to live in a house with a garden (a flat could work in the right set up but having regular outside time and being conscious that at times she likes her voice heard is important).

She loves to socialise - her current foster home took her to small gathering and she loved meeting the humans - both adults and children and other dogs - be warned - she will try to pinch any food she can! She could be a great pub dog too!

Since being with us she has lost 1.5kg in weight and it will be vital she stays trim going forward - this will mean some strict meals as Trixie loves to eat! She also barks while you are preparing her food - she’s a bright one! Her current foster home are working to train her not to do this but ongoing effort will be needed.

She’s good with other dogs - best with those her size or bigger and could live with others or alone with dog friends to meet up with.

Trixie has recently had her teeth removed - this isn’t holding her back and despite being the tender age of 14 she was back to full form as soon as she was collected post op!

She has been diagnosed with a collapsing trachea however we have seen hugely diminished symptoms since she’s dropped the extra pounds and this doesn’t require any treatment.

Understanding the Ladder of Escalation in Dogs 🐾

Dogs rarely “bite out of nowhere”
they usually communicate in clear steps long before things escalate.

Learning to spot these early signals helps keep everyone safe and reduces stress for your dog.

Think of it like a ladder, where each step is a message from:

Licking lips / nose licking = subtle discomfort or uncertainty
Blinking, turning head away = “I don’t like this attention”

And escalating to:

Growling or showing teeth = clear warning: “I need distance”
Snapping / air biting = last warning before contact
Biting = dog has been pushed too far

The important thing to remember: these are not “bad behaviours” they are communication signals. The earlier we notice them, the easier it is to help the dog feel safe again.

LOOKING FOR A HOME (or foster)

Kim is a 4 year old retired greyhound.

She is looking for a home whose human(s) are around for much of the day and should have another dog for company - ideally another medium-large youngster.

An alternative for those working away from the home and not able to take her with them, would be doggy day care - she has done well in this setting and loves meeting her canine friends.

Once settled, she could go off lead in secure / semi-secure spots on the island with another dog(s) but larger open areas wouldn’t be suitable.

She’s clean in the house and travels well. She’s used to being either in the boot or back seat of a car.

She doesn’t like to be left for longer periods so a home who could build this up is needed. She also can be partial to the odd wire when left alone so electrical items need to be out of reach and she should initially wear her basket muzzle for safety. As a retired greyhound she is comfortable wearing one. If a dog cam was an option, this would be useful too.

She has shown interest in cats so a home without them is important and she could be homed with older, dog experienced children.

She has been in a home with a caged bird and although was interested initially, hasn’t worried since. Small furries might be a little more tempting but if able to be kept separated, that could work.

When first meeting new dogs, Kim can have a little grumble if they are in her face for too long but quickly settles and enjoys meeting new friends out and about.

Kim is a gentle soul who makes those who meet her fall in love with her and greyhounds in general so be warned - if she joined you, you may want more of this amazing breed in your life!

LOOKING FOR A HOME

Four year old Max is looking for fun and adventures. If you haven’t read his back story he came to us as an emergency and had surgery to remove part of a toy that he’d ingested. He is now in fine fettle and ready for a new home.

He is used to family life, he can live with children who are confident around dogs and understand he can’t have soft toys and shouldn’t leave them laying around. He could live with a female dog or as an only dog. He really loves time with his people so would like someone who is around for much of the day. He can be left for 2-3 hours, he is house trained. He enjoys time in the garden, so will need a secure outside space.

His downfall - he loves soft toys a bit too much and will eat them if unsupervised. He is busy, he likes to be involved in all you do and does enjoy his trips out. He charmed everyone at the vets and does the best grin showing his teefs.

He’s not suited to living with caged feathered or furry pets where they are in his reach.

What does the HSBA Garden Railway and a spotty dog have in common?!

Literally a life saved with funds raised by the fabulous Curtis, who hosted another successful Open Day to assist with the bill for a new arrival.

Max the dalmation came into our care as an emergency with urgent investigations needed when he continued to be very unwell with weight loss, diarrhoea and vomiting.

An X-ray revealed something odd looking and surgery followed. Vets were shocked at the size of what they discovered stuck in Max’s duodenum - see photo in comments.

Blood work showed his potassium levels were in his boots. It was a worrying time and the first 24-48 were critical. Max was admitted daily for potassium infusions and his levels crept up.

This all happened 5 weeks ago and we’re delighted to report that Max has made a full recovery and is now signed off from the vets and has been allowed his first off lead run after what was life saving surgery. Thank you to all in involved in Max’s care.🙏

It is now time to find this boy a 5* home. A separate 🏡 post will follow.

Keeping Your Dog Safe in the Summer Heat 🐶

As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that dogs can quickly overheat, even on days that don’t feel particularly hot to us.

Help them stay cool with paddling pools, frozen treats, or damp towels.

Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, confusion, or collapse. Heatstroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate veterinary attention.

Some dogs are particularly vulnerable, including puppies, senior dogs, flat-faced breeds, overweight dogs, and those with underlying health conditions.

Always provide fresh, cool water and ensure your dog has access to shade throughout the day.

Pavements can become dangerously hot. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet.

Never leave a dog in a parked car, even with windows open. Temperatures can rise rapidly and become life-threatening within minutes.

Stay cool and enjoy the sunshine responsibly! ☀️🕶️
