When Matt Du Heaume signed up for a stand‑up comedy challenge, he didn’t expect to share his mental health story or find it transformative. In a powerful and honest account, he opens up about living with OCD and anxiety, the impact on his work and family life, and how finding humour helped his recovery. From not being able to leave the house to performing in front of 240 people, his journey is both moving and inspiring.

Meet our new JET Ambassador, Matt Du Heaume

'I wish I had known about JET'

Matt is a self-employed accountant, whose interests include magic, karate, baking, skateboarding, playing music, writing and performing stand-up comedy. The last of those came about due to his first experience with JET, when he took part in the White Collar Comedy Challenge earlier this year.

He says:

‘My experience with mental illness started decades earlier. However, it took a severe mental breakdown in 2017 for me to finally be diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Severe Depression.

‘I ended up taking more than a year away from work to focus on treatment. But my return to the office was not a smooth one. Although perceptions of mental health and mental illness have improved in recent years, I still feel they’re widely misunderstood by both employers and those experiencing them. Looking back, if I had known a place like JET existed, I believe they could have supported my return and made the process far easier for everyone involved.

‘Perceptions are moving in the right direction, but we’re not there yet. That’s why I wanted to become a JET Ambassador: to show others living with mental illness that recovery is possible and to help raise awareness of the vital work JET does. Their support is crucial in helping people with disabilities recognise that they can be a valued and capable part of the workforce, just like anyone else.’

Presenting plaques made by the Acorn Woodshack, Acting Chair Dan Perkins said: ‘We thank Helen and Lorna for their dedication, leadership and tireless support of JET over the past seven years. Their contribution has helped shape who we are today.’
