Well done to all youth participants from Ireland’s Youth Forum on Online Safety in particular to Hannah who is a member of Comhairle na nÓg (Co. na Gaillimhe) and Youth Work Ireland Galway - Loughrea. They were invited to present at the European Parliament’s Culture and Education Committee in Brussels. 👏👏👏

Dillon, Hannah and Kelsie are three young participants from Ireland’s Youth Forum on Online Safety which was convened by Minister Patrick O’Donovan in June. They were invited to present to the European Parliament’s Culture and Education (CULT) Committee in Brussels today, together with representatives from the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and the Ombudsman for Children’s Office.

They spoke to the Committee about the importance of having online access, including for connecting with friends and learning. They also highlighted the risks of being online, including cyberbullying, addictive design features, and unwanted contact, among others.

A really engaging day at EU Presidency Conference on Youth: Information and Constructive Dialogue today.

Thanks to ETBI and Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) for organising the event

Opened by Minister Hildegarde Naughton and supported by officials from An Roinn Oideachais agus Óige: Department of Education and Youth, the conference created an opportunity for policy makers to share space with frontline youth workers, youth work managers, researchers, and ETB Youth Officers.

National Youth Council of Ireland and Hope and Courage Collective facilitated workshops on youth participation and constructive dialogue, and strategies for dealing with the far right narrative and disinformation.

We were well represented on panels in the afternoon and Karl Duff from Youth Affairs and Sinead Morgan GRETB did a great job rounding up the day and summing up the key messages.

For us the takeaways:

*Youth Workers and Youth Spaces need resourcing, to have the time to build trusting relationships that facilitate dialogue and to be able to respectfully challenge misinformation and disinformation.
*Youth Information Projects and the online YIChat are a vitally important resource. Trusted information from trusted, non-judgemental adults.
*Social media platforms need to be pushed much harder to tackle the algorithms targeting young people and creating echo chambers.
*We are all in the online space, we can do more to make it a safer space for young people and we can give them tools and skills offline such as critical thinking, fact checking tips, creating their own credible online content.

Youth Work Fridays are all about celebrating and spotlighting the incredible work happening across the youth work sector and the amazing young people at its heart. What better way to kick off this month's Youth Work Friday than by announcing Oíche na hÓige 2026, taking place on 13 November!

Youth Work Ireland member services across the country will be hosting a range of exciting events and activities to celebrate young people, showcase the impact of youth work, and create opportunities for fun, connection, and participation.

Oíche na hÓige/Youth Night 2026 is supported by the An Roinn Oideachais agus Óige - Department of Education and Youth , Education & Training Boards Ireland, Galway and Roscommon ETB, National Youth Council of Ireland, and the wider youth sector.

This summer young people from Ballinasloe travelled to mainland Europe to participate in the Erasmus+ funded project: Theatre of Dreams. Together with young people from Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Germany, Slovakia and Spain a magical week of creativity and solidarity was the result. Everyone was encouraged to join in learning new creative skills and the week resulted in public performances in the town square. Participants also got to explore the city Cologne and attend a professional performance.

The motto of the week was 'Express with Fascination: Fascinate by Expression!'.
Friendships were formed and a greater understanding of what unites us in
