Today is World Day of Social Justice.
When I think of social justice, I remember being a member of a Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation group in school. We used to raise awareness about social injustices, international conflict, and environmental concerns. We held a couple of fundraisers too.
Being involved in this group was probably my first introduction to human rights activism. I liked it because I felt informed about the world, but not in a way where I felt entirely helpless.
I feel like similar groups are even more vital now. Not necessarily because the world is worse now, even though it certainly feels that way. But back then, social media was something I could see photos of friends and family on, using a desktop computer in the spare room, not an application of unimaginable horrors that's on a rectangle I carry with me everywhere.
If you want to feel informed about the world, in a way where you don't feel entirely powerless to change anything, consider joining an Amnesty local group. Feel free to DM me if your nearest group is Galway. Other groups can be found on the Amnesty website. If that feels like too much right now, consider visiting the site anyway. There are petitions you can sign, and Write For Rights campaigns you can take part in. I think connection, awareness with suitable actions, and grassroots movements are what is required to lessen the horrors of this world.
Thanks for reading my ramblings. Have a fantastic day.
