Last Wednesday evening, acclaimed rock climber Hans Florine delivered a presentation in Monroe's Pub.

Hans shared some stories from his 100+ ascents of El Capitan, including breaking and re-breaking speed records and his partnership with Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind person to have climbed The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite. Erik was in attendance on the night and joined Hans to answer questions from the crowd. Hans and Erik have climbed all over the world together since they first teamed up to climb El Cap, and Erik has gone on to climb the seven summits (the only blind person to hold this accomplishment).

Hans has generously donated all profits from the event to GMRT. Many thanks to Hans and Erik for speaking and to Vanessa and Andy Kirkpatrick for organising the event!

Galway Mountain Rescue Team Marks 50 Years of Lifesaving Service

Galway Mountain Rescue Team will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special event at the Clayton Hotel, Galway, on Saturday, 6th June 2026, bringing together current and past team members to mark five decades of dedicated voluntary service.

Since its establishment in 1975, the team has played a critical role in emergency response across the west of Ireland, assisting those who are lost, injured, or in difficulty in remote and mountainous terrain. Operating 24/7 in all weather conditions, the volunteer-led organisation provides specialist search and rescue services, often in challenging and high-risk environments.

Working closely with An Garda Síochána, the Irish Coast Guard, and the National Ambulance Service, Galway Mountain Rescue Team combines advanced rescue skills with emergency medical expertise to deliver vital support when it is needed most.

The 50th anniversary event will celebrate the team’s achievements over the past half-century, honour the contribution of past and present members, and recognise the ongoing support of partners and the wider community.

Team Leader Alan Carr acknowledges the event “This milestone is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our volunteers over the past 50 years. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of mountain rescue services in the west of Ireland both in the community and for all visitors to the region."

Galway Mountain Rescue Team is entirely volunteer based and relies on public donations to fund training, equipment, and operations.

Today at 17.21 our team was tasked by An Garda Síochána to respond to an incident on Mount Gable where a hiker has sustained injuries and was unable to descend.

Mountain rescue team members assessed the casualty and provided care on site. They assisted the other party members down the hill while Rescue 115 airlifted the casualty to hospital for further care.

We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery and hope to see them in the hills again soon! Many thanks as always to all involved, including Mayo Mountain Rescue Team for being on standby to assist

At 13:17 today, the team was tasked by An Garda Síochána to respond to an incident on Mount Gable, where a hiker had sustained an injury.

Galway Mountain Rescue Team were tasked twice this week.

On Tuesday, the team responded to a call from the National Ambulance Service (NAS) to assist an injured hiker on Ben Levy.

On Friday, we were tasked again by NAS to the Burren region to assist another injured hiker. Due to the nature of the injuries, helicopter support was required, and the casualty was airlifted with the assistance of the Rescue 115 helicopter. GMRT supported the operation by establishing a highline to facilitate a safe extraction.

We wish both casualties a full and speedy recovery.

If you require assistance in the mountains, call 112 or 999 and ask for Mountain Rescue.

It was great to welcome Rick Lorenz back to Galway this week. Rick was a member of GMRT when he lived here, and we’ve been lucky to stay in touch over the years. He kindly gave our team a brilliant presentation on and his experience in the team. Grateful for the knowledge shared, the connection maintained, and the visit!
