Orienteering Ireland

Orienteering Ireland Orienteering is a sport, which combines outdoor adventure with map reading and navigational skills.

Orienteering Ireland is the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of orienteering in Ireland and coordinates the activities of our various clubs around the country. It involves navigating though forests, parks, open mountain or streets with the aid of a specially produced map and orienteering compass, with the aim being to locate checkpoints (controls) on various natural and man-made feature

s along the way, such as a boulder, track junction, Buildings or pond. Controls are generally represented by distinctive orange and white flags. The skill in orienteering is in choosing the best route between controls — while beginners’ courses may not offer choice, as you progress you will learn to decide between options — perhaps over a hill or a longer route which goes round it. It is this stimulating mental challenge as well as the physical activity that makes orienteering so popular. Each event may have a number of courses of differing lengths and levels of difficulty occurring at the same time.

And that’s a wrap. A huge Thank You to CorkOrienteeringClub for facilitating the rescheduled IOC2026, to everyone who made it back to the beautiful Sheep’s Head peninsula, to all the landowners and the Sheep’s Head communities, and to the weather gods for playing ball. And finally, to our very own Classic event controller - Dave Richardson. 🥰

Last week we welcomed Badminton Ireland for a fun two-hour introduction to orienteering team building session! 🧭

We kicked things off with some orienteering games before putting their new skills into practice on a course.

It turns out the Badminton Ireland team are a very competitive bunch! There was plenty of running, thinking, teamwork and great crack along the way.

A brilliant couple of hours, thanks to everyone for getting stuck in! 😊

Congratulations to both.
