Orienteering Ireland

Orienteering Ireland Orienteering Ireland is the Irish national governing body of the sport of orienteering. It is a full Member of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF).

Orienteering is a sport, which combines outdoor adventure with map reading and navigational skills. It involves navigating though forests, parks, open mountain or streets with the aid of a specially produced map and orienteering compass, with the aim being to locate checkpoints (controls) on various natural and man-made features along the way, such as a boulder, track junction, Buildings or pond.

Controls are generally represented by distinctive orange and white flags. The skill in orienteering is in choosing the best route between controls — while beginners’ courses may not offer choice, as you progress you will learn to decide between options — perhaps over a hill or a longer route which goes round it. It is this stimulating mental challenge as well as the physical activity that makes orienteering so popular. Each event may have a number of courses of differing lengths and levels of difficulty occurring at the same time.

📅 20–21 June 2026

Choose your challenge:

🏃 6-Hour Event
📅 Sunday 21 June
⏰ Start: 8:00am

The ultimate navigation challenge. Teams plan their own route, balancing strategy, fitness and decision-making to achieve the highest score possible.

🧭 ROGAINE IRELAND 2026 - TEAM CHECKLISTS 🧭

Good preparation is an essential part of a safe and enjoyable rogaine experience. Whether you're taking on the 6-Hour event or the 24-Hour challenge, please take the time to review the mandatory equipment requirements before event day.

The team checklists outline the minimum equipment that competitors must carry during the event. The Wicklow/Dublin Mountains can experience rapidly changing weather conditions, so being properly equipped is vital.

📋 Important:
Please sign the checklist to confirm that you will be carrying the required equipment for the duration of the event.

The checklists can be downloaded and printed from the Rogaine Rules page on the Setanta Orienteers website:

Please ensure that every member of your team is familiar with the kit requirements and arrives prepared for the challenge ahead.

🏔️ 24-Hour competitors: Don't underestimate the importance of carrying the correct clothing and equipment for an overnight mountain event.

🧭 6-Hour competitors: Even on the shorter course, the mandatory kit is there for your safety and comfort in the hills.

Be prepared. Stay safe. Enjoy the adventure.

Closing date for entries is Sunday 14th June - https://setantaorienteers.org/rogaine-ireland-2026-24hr-and-6hr/ or on the Orienteering Ireland website ➡ Fixtures

🧭 ROGAINE IRELAND 2026
24-Hour & 6-Hour Navigation Challenge | Wicklow Mountains | 20-21 June 2026

Ready for an unforgettable mountain navigation adventure?

Rogaine Ireland is a long-distance navigation event that combines strategy, endurance, teamwork and adventure in the spectacular Wicklow Mountains. Whether you're an experienced orienteer, adventure racer, mountain runner or hiker, there's a challenge to suit you.

🏃‍♀️ How does it work?

The aim is not simply to visit the most controls. Each control is worth a different number of points, and your goal is to achieve the highest score possible within the time limit.

This creates the unique challenge of rogaining - balancing route choice, navigation and fitness. A team that visits fewer controls may still achieve a higher score by selecting higher-value controls and planning a smarter route.

⚠️ Time management is critical. Teams that finish late will lose points, with penalties increasing quickly for overtime.

6-Hour Event

✅ Controls already marked on your map
✅ Orienteering maps provided
✅ 1:15,000 scale mapping
✅ Compete solo or as a team
✅ Ideal introduction to rogaining

24-Hour Event

🔥 Teams plan their own route and add the remaining controls to their map before the start
🔥 Orienteering maps provided
🔥 1:15,000 scale mapping
🔥 Test your navigation, endurance and decision-making over 24 hours

📅 Event Dates: 20–21 June 2026
