Liveaboards

Liveaboards Irish waterways have been home to people living on boats for as long as there have been boats navigating these waterways.

Here we pay tribute to this proud tradition

🚤 Dublin’s housing crisis has driven people to live on canal boats — and now Waterways Ireland wants to price them out too.

Facing rents that most people simply can’t afford, some Dubliners found a creative solution: life on the water. But Waterways Ireland is pushing for a 500% fee hike for liveaboard boaters — because apparently no housing option should be left affordable.

The supposed justification? They might if Jupiter aligns with Saturn in a leap year reinvest the money in fixing derelict canal infrastructure. Might. If conditions are just right. Don’t hold your breath.

And before you get too excited about that promise — this is the same organisation that has taken 5 years to fix a water tap. Five Years. For replacing a 5 quid tap.

Great to know the people priced out of Dublin’s rental market can count on Waterways Ireland to swoop in and price them off the water too. 👏 corporate capitalism at its best

Diary of a Liveaboard: Fair play to them.
While the rest of us are trapped in traffic, mortgages, and arguing with landlords over mould, these lads are parked up watching sunsets on the water.

Boat life isn’t glamorous — things leak, storms humble you fast, and every job takes twice as long — but there’s something mighty about choosing freedom over the usual rat race 🚤🇮🇪

From rising costs to freedom and simplicity, Ireland’s liveaboards explain the realities of making homes on waterways

Happy weekend everyone! 🍀🚤
Today’s canal trivia challenge: can anyone guess where this is?

Bonus points if you can identify the bridge, the waterway, the boat… or the pub nearest to it. 😄
